Office Updates

From Ms. Amodeo

The Middle School Open House is this Thursday, 9/28, on the schedule below. We hope to see you all there.

Office Updates

From Mr. Megivern

September is rolling along at T-burg Middle School. We’ve reached the end of the proverbial honeymoon phase, as students and staff seem to be making adjustments and settling in. Friendly reminder: We do not allow students to have caffeinated drinks in school. Only water is permitted. Thanks as always for your support.

School Nutrition

Though school meals are no longer subsidized for every student, free and reduced-priced meals are available to those who qualify. The application can be found HERE.

To add funds to your child’s school lunch account, you can use our online system at MySchoolBucks or you can send a check directly to the TCSD Food Service Department. Students may always pay cash if they choose to as well.

5th Grade

5th Grade Daily Planner (Please bookmark for your use).

Science: Thank you for supporting your students in their nightly sky observations. We do this for three more weeks, so please help keep up the momentum. Ready to be impressed? Ask your kiddo what causes day and night. Ask them what our shadows can tell us about time of day, and how that relates to the position of the sun in the sky and the rotation of the Earth. Ask about sundials and moon phases.

ELA: This week students visited the MS library to learn more about its procedures but most importantly what it has to offer. Students also picked out their first 5th Grade JRB to have completed independently in the next 4 weeks. Students were able to decide if they would be reading this book by chapters or pages and set a weekly goal to meet the 4 week deadline. Students are encouraged to read and enjoy this book in order to add it to their in class Books Read List for the whole year. Also we are starting a new class text next week titled, Front Desk. Please check out the linked letter to families with information regarding this novel: Front Desk Parent Letter.

Math: This week we learned how to use exponents to denote powers of ten and how to multiply and divide those numbers. We also practiced how to read and write decimals to the thousandths using standard, word, and expanded form. Looking ahead to the coming week we will be comparing and rounding decimals. Students have also been enjoying some friendly competition to get the high score on digit.party in their free time, can you beat their score?

Social Studies: This week we looked at G.R.A.P.E.S., a system we will use to study different civilizations throughout the year. Ask your 5th grader if they remember what each letter stands for in the acronym.

Band: 5th grade band students should have gotten their instrument choice and a supply list. Please ask your student for these papers and then let me know if you have any questions about renting an instrument or purchasing supplies. I assume you will rent an instrument UNLESS you contact me.

6th Grade

Sixth graders will be participating in a Kids Discover the Trail field trip on October 6th. We will be spending the day at Cayuga Nature Center and will be outside all day. We will go rain or shine, so please have your student dress appropriately. Students filled out a lunch order form in their homeroom if they wanted to order a school lunch for the field trip. If they did not order lunch, please send your student in with a “field trip” lunch.

Social Studies: Students have created amazing autobiography islands and they are so fun to see. We spent the week talking about what is on a map and different types of maps. We looked at current events in class on Friday.

Math: Students have learned some new vocabulary this week-variable, expression, equation and commutative property. We will be writing expressions and equations next week.

Science: Students spent last week analyzing data of temperature and elevation. We looked at how elevation impacts temperature and why.

ELA: Six word memoirs were completed this week and they look great. The students are really into Lightning Thief and they do not want to stop reading. They should be annotating while they read! They are looking for challenges and responses in chapter 4. We are going to start looking at allusions to myths next week.

Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule Lessons are off to a great start! We have one big assignment this week - a Family Practice Agreement. Please read this over with your student, fill it out, sign and return.

7th Grade

7th Grade Digital Planner (Please bookmark this link.)

Science: The week finished with a lab practical on science skills. Students got to show off their knowledge and use science equipment around the room. Everyone now feels more prepared for multiple hands-on labs this year! Next week we will begin a unit on the Diversity of Life.

ELA 7: This past week we read an article about Rosh Hashanah, and it served as a springboard for our own self-reflection about what is important in our lives. We created a one-pager about what is important to us. This coming week we will explore making inferences and supporting them with text details.

Math: Next week we’ll dive deeper into our projects with both Math 7 and Pre-Algebra. Our project work will include working with calculating the overall cost of materials for our events and our unit prices. As part of this, we’ll learn about the constant of proportionality. Pre-Algebra will also get introduced to Scientific Notation. Our classes will be taking the IXL diagnostic in small bits of time during this week and next.

Social Studies: This week we continued to study Pre-Columbian Native American cultures! We learned that Native American groups developed unique cultures based on their geographic locations and we ended the week with a deep dive into the Northeastern region, studying the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois)

7th World Languages (Ms. Cederstrom)- This week, students were introduced to the numbers 1-13, how to ask for and give their age, and how to say “I have”. Students were also given a basic overview of how to look words up online. We will be starting The “Box of Awesome” Project this week. Please remind your student to bring in an empty box (cereal, cracker, shoe, etc.) for this project.

Chorus: 7th Graders are starting chorus lessons this week! 7/8 Chorus Lesson Schedule/Groups - week of 9/18

Music: We have been having such a great time playing musical genre kahoot and listening to/discussing music from different genres. We are getting ready to complete an assignment where students choose a genre and artist they are unfamiliar with to research.

7/8 Band: Lots going on! An e-mail went out Thursday (3 times because Mrs. Robertson should know better than to send out important info at the end of the week) with a lot of important information. Some links to that info are below. Please see e-mail for more detail.

ELA 8: Monday & Tuesday are running on a 1-hour delay for students to complete the iReady reading diagnostic. Students will conference with me later this week, to help analyze Students this data (along with DIBELS’ reading fluency) to help set ELA goals for the year. Students continue to read Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen (ch. 4-10 this week).

Social Studies: This week students unpack the Historian’s Toolkit. We will review and practice terms such as: primary/secondary sources, reliability, credibility, corroboration, and context.

8th Grade D.C. Trip

8th graders - Plans for this year’s Washington DC trip are underway. The dates for this year’s trip will be June 12-14th. Our hope is that ALL 8th graders will be able to attend this year’s trip. There will be a meeting with all 8th graders to present the trip, behavior expectations for the year, and ways that you can help with the trip. If you have any questions see Mr. Begeal in room 306.

We need your help! We need to sell more chicken BBQ dinners! We need to have all orders in by Monday at noon and we are short our minimum #. Even if you are not planning to attend the Open House event on Thursday 9/28 - you can still order a BBQ dinner - (they are all packaged to go) - and pick it up at 5pm to take home. This fundraiser helps to support the 8th grade trip to DC and this would be a great way to help us out and save you from having to cook that night! If you haven’t already please use this link to order some dinners for Thursday. Thanks for your consideration.

Also - the PTO is looking for 8th graders willing to volunteer to babysit during PTO meetings. PTO will donate money towards the 8th grade trip for the volunteer shifts.

STEAM Salsa Challenge

In STEAM class, we kicked off our Salsa Challenge with a salsa and tomato tasting. Students are developing their own recipes and logos for their product. Next week we’ll make test batches of our salsas and give each other feedback for improvement.

Farm to School

The Harvest of the Month is tomatoes, so we held a tomato tasting in the cafeteria. Students tasted Sungold tomatoes as well as other cherry tomatoes. Sungolds, with their bright yellow color and sweet taste, were the favorite.
