Office Updates

From Ms. Amodeo

Welcome back!

The middle school opened for all students last Thursday and we are off to a great start.

A quick reminder that cell phones and other electronic devices being used as cell phones (like some smart watches) are not permitted during the school day. Students should store phones in their lockers.

Other guidance about school rules and policies can be found in our 23-24 Student Handbook HERE (link at bottom right). Additionally, a hard copy of the handbook will be distributed to all students in the coming weeks. Please take a moment to review this important document with your student(s).

COVID-19: Guidelines regarding the management of COVID-19 have not changed since last school year. You can find general information from the CDC HERE and specifics about what to do if someone tests positive HERE.

From Mr. Megivern

Hello! My name is Conor Megivern, your new middle school dean of students. I am a Trumansburg alum, coming back to T-burg after years of teaching in the Ithaca City School District. I am thrilled to be a part of the Blue Raider community once again, and I look forward to working with our middle schoolers this year. The first couple days were jam-packed with introductions, learning routines, and making new connections with students and staff. I couldn’t be more excited and optimistic about the school year ahead. Thank you!

Office Updates

Chromebook Care

As we hand out Chromebooks to students, we are reminding them about how to take good care of their machines. Teacher Amy Dawson made a slideshow about responsible Chromebook use.

School Nutrition

Though school meals are no longer subsidized for every student, free and reduced-priced meals are available to those who qualify. The application can be found HERE.

To add funds to your child’s school lunch account, you can use our online system at MySchoolBucks or you can send a check directly to the TCSD Food Service Department. Students may always pay cash if they choose to as well.

7th Grade

7th Grade Digital Planner (Please bookmark this link.)

Science: Our science class started with getting to know each other while we reviewed observations and inferences using skulls, furs, fungus, exoskeletons and sea stars. Next week we will make goal vision boards and review how to take accurate measurements.

ELA 7: We had our first field trip this past Friday to the library. Our homework for ELA is to read for 20 minutes each day. We each have a bookmark for September to record how many minutes we actually read each day. We need to complete this reading outside of ELA class. Sometimes we will read books of our choice, and other times we will be assigned a book to read. We will total and track our minutes. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Math: We learned about how our class works this week! We practiced working in random groups to solve a problem at the whiteboard. Check out the video tour of our classroom and our classroom website (you can see our learning standards for the year). Next week we’ll start to delve into our first math project for the year.

Social Studies: Welcome to 7th grade Social Studies! This week we got to know the each other and reviewed some geography terms

World Languages: We have been working on building a positive, safe, and productive learning community that encourages kindness and supports our middle school success skills (collaboration, participation, and self-directed learning). We have also touched upon some basic first words in the target language. Ms. Cederstrom and Ms. Battles are very excited for our first full week with our world language learners!

Health: Wonderful to see students revisit the ways to maintain or improve on each health dimension. We reviewed class expectations and procedures and built a LIFE poster that reflects examples of our health. Next week students will begin the unit on Emotional and mental health. Lessons will focus on what it means to be emotionally healthy and what qualities define a healthy relationship, how to express feelings in healthy ways and how to build healthy relationships. Due Monday → parent signed course description.

Chorus: Welcome to chorus! Select students received an Area All-State Commitment form. You must fill out this form to be nominated. Please return the form by next Friday 9/15.

8th Grade

Science 8: This week we did some get-to-know activities and the students took a Google survey to tell me a little bit more about themselves. We also set up our composition notebooks and went over our lab safety rules. Next week we begin our first unit of study: Chemical Interactions. We will have many lab activities throughout the week. Please ask your child about the Course Outline sheet that went home with them on Friday.

Regents Earth Science: This week we did some get-to-know activities and the students took a Google survey to tell me a little bit more about themselves. We set up our Earth Science binders and went over our lab safety rules. Next week we begin our first investigations with density and studying the shape of the earth. Please ask your child about the Course Outline sheet that went home with them on Friday.

Social Studies: Hello Parents! This week we took some time to get to know one another and better understand what and how we will be learning in social studies. Please be sure to read, discuss, and sign the Social Studies 8 letter that I sent home. Thank you.
