Office Updates
From Mr. Megivern
October is National Bullying Prevention Month! Each week on the announcements we will highlight strategies and resources students can use to help Trumansburg Middle School continue to be a safe, friendly, and bully-free learning community.
You can find a link to the National Bullying Prevention Center HERE.
The Parent Advocacy Coalition for Educational Rights (PACER) also has an anti-bullying website for kids (HERE) and for teens (HERE).
And finally, click HERE to read up on New York State’s Dignity for All Students Act.
School Nutrition
Though school meals are no longer subsidized for every student, free and reduced-priced meals are available to those who qualify. The application can be found HERE.
To add funds to your child’s school lunch account, you can use our online system at MySchoolBucks or you can send a check directly to the TCSD Food Service Department. Students may always pay cash if they choose to as well.

Science: This week we had demonstrations of the relative sizes and distances of the Earth, the sun, and the moon. Then we started getting into moon phases. Waning, waxing, crescent, gibbous - your kids should know ‘em all! Thank you again for supporting their nightly sky observations!
Math: We spent the beginning of the week reviewing for our mid module assessment on Wednesday. Students participated in solving a 3 act task called the Final Lap, where they had to order decimal times. The other half of the week we learned about King Henry and the metric system. Ask your student what the saying is to remember the order of the metric prefixes and how to use them!
Social Studies: This week we began to examine and research some early civilizations in the Western Hemisphere. We are focusing on the Adena, Haida, and Taino.
Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule Lessons are going very well! Students should practice their mouthpiece or instrument for just a few minutes each day. They should also practice their note names (Level 1) at this website.

Social Studies: Sixth graders are working on putting on a short production of The Odyssey. They have small groups that are working on short sections of the text. We have a large group of sixth graders that are very interested in Greek Mythology, we will be incorporating that into social studies over the next couple of weeks. We are also focusing on ancient Greece and learning GRAPES.
Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule Thanks to everyone who sold coffee for the Music Boosters! They are thrilled with our success. :) Students received a new piece of music to work on. They also have an assignment in Making Music Matter. It is tagged with a red post-it flag and circled.
Here is our Course Outline and Concert Dates. Please mark your calendars.

Please remind students to bring pencils, their Chromebook charger, and a water bottle to school.
Science: Everyone enjoyed looking at objects under the microscope. Did you know when you look in a microscope everything is upside down and backwards? Next week we will continue our voyage into the microscopic world and observe plant and animal cells.
ELA 7: This week in ELA, we learned a bit about Mexican-American writer Sandra Cisneros. Then we read excerpts from her book The House on Mango Street. We made inferences about the main character Esperanza and her story. We used text evidence to support our inferences in a written short response. This coming week we will have assigned reading each night for the book Hello, Universe.
Math: This week we continued our work with Ratios and Proportions. We are working to find the constant of proportionality and to recognize how to determine if a relationship is proportional. In Pre-Algebra we are also working through laws of exponents and multiplying and dividing with scientific notation. I would love it if you log into Google Classroom with your student. View a tour around of what our Math Google Classroom looks like. Are you interested in volunteering in our math class? I’m happy to have you for any time that works for you. Please email Amy Dawson to learn more. (You don’t need to be up to speed with grade 7 Math - really!)
Social Studies: Hi everybody! This week we started talking about European exploration of the Americas, covering the Columbian Exchange and the impact on Native American peoples and cultures.
Health: This week began with a game-based review of our first unit and then moved to our new unit: violence and injury prevention. Words of focus: trauma, seriousness, violence, dignity, risk, unintentional injury, consequences. Students have examined national data, shared insights about the differences in good risk-taking and how to avoid bad risk-taking, and unpacked the various benefits of avoiding behaviors risky to one’s health. Ask your child to share their knowledge about the benefits of wearing a seat belt and other ways to be safe while in or on a motorized vehicle. Next week they will learn a step-by-step health-focused, decision-making model that can be applied throughout their lives. The Advocacy Center’s outreach educator will teach a lesson on knowing, stating, and respecting boundaries. Finally, students will learn techniques for addressing unwanted touch.
Chorus: Lesson Schedule MP1 (9.25.23) Chorus Concert is December, 12th @ 7:00 PM in HS Auditorium (students report at 6:30 PM to the HS Chorus Room)
Music: Class activities for the week will include: more practice with genre identification, presentation of songs from ‘Genre Identification Activity #2’ (posted in classwork), and starting to work on ‘Genre Activity #3’ (soon to be posted in classwork). We have begun to build a class playlist on Spotify, and we will be gearing up to create our own genre identification quiz in Kahoot!
7/8 Band: We are starting to work together SO well! Students are settling into our routine, and rehearsals are running more and more smoothly each day. We now have a 2nd band piece to work on with a 3rd on the way. Ask your student to play you a little from ‘The Water is Wide’.

Troubadour
Dear Writers, Photographers, and Artists~
Are you interested in contributing to the Trumansburg Troubadour? The Trumansburg Troubadour is a school community newsletter written by students and supported by the Trumansburg Education Foundation. It is a great opportunity to have your work published and shared with the community. We are accepting submissions from students in grades 3-12 this fall.
In December, we will publish our regular Troubadour newsletter dedicated to school and community news and encourage students to choose one of the suggested topics below or a topic of their own related to school news/programs/events. Submissions should be half-page to full page in length with some flexibility (word count: 400-800 words).
We are also accepting creative stories, poetry, artwork, and photography for a Creative Edition of the Troubadour that will be published separately later this winter. Creative stories will need to be 800 words or less. Students are welcome to submit to both editions of the Troubadour if they would like.
The Troubadour will be compiled and edited virtually, though we may have opportunities to meet in person or individually. Submissions are typically submitted and edited using Google Docs. All interested contributors (grades 3-12), please contact trumansburgtroubadour@gmail.com with your topic ideas and questions by Friday, October 13, 2023. First drafts will be due by Friday, November 3, 2023, and all final submissions will be due by Friday, December 8, 2023.
We look forward to hearing from you!
