Office Updates

From Ms. Lomax

New Middle School Principal! (Just kidding)! My husband and I celebrated our wedding last week and I’m in the process of changing my surname to Lomax. Any messages or notes you receive from that name are still from me!

Thank you to the Student Council for organizing a fantastic Spirit Week and Homecoming Dance last week. Our middle school students showed their Blue Raider pride and had a lot of fun.

Tuesday is Halloween! Students are permitted to dress up in school-appropriate Halloween costumes on Tuesday, October 31st. To keep our celebration safe and to allow for classroom learning to continue, please adhere to the following guidelines:

-Costumes must be put on at home (no dressing up at school)

-Hats are permitted, but faces must not be covered

-No masks (faces must be visible at all time)

-No gore

-No weapons (imitation or real)

Please be considerate. Classes will go on as usual, so costumes must not be overly distracting or messy: no large inflatable outfits, loose glitter, confetti, etc. If a costume does not follow the above guidelines or becomes a distraction to classes, students will be asked to change into regular school attire.

School Nutrition

We are pleased to announce that all school meals are free for Trumansburg CSD students beginning Wednesday, November 1, 2023. Our district has been granted the mid-year community eligibility provision (CEP), a federal and state grant subsidy that covers the expense of student meals. We are more than ecstatic to provide free nutritious meals to our student population, alleviating the financial burden on our families. Additional items beyond the daily meal will still be available for separate purchase should students so desire. Many thanks to our school lunch personnel who work tirelessly to provide our students with nutritious and appetizing meals. Their commitment is essential to the education and overall health of our student body. Thank you for the positive impact you make every day. We look forward to seeing all students in the lunch line next Wednesday!

Math: The students took their end of unit test on Friday thus wrapping up our first unit on decimal place value.. These assessments will be handed back to the students next week for them to take home. Looking ahead we will begin our second unit on multi digit whole number and decimal operations.

Social Studies: This week we built background knowledge on Ancient Mesoamerica. We took a “gallery walk,” read articles, and completed some geography mapping. Next week we will begin our study of the Mayan civilization.

Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule

7th Grade

7th Grade Digital Planner (Please bookmark this link.)

Please remind students to bring pencils, their Chromebook charger, and a water bottle to school.

ELA 7: We have read the first 24 chapters of Hello, Universe as we continue to read 2 chapters per night. We have grown in our writing fluency as most of us have nearly doubled the number of words that we wrote on Monday. We are also writing better summary sentences and short responses about the text. We will delve into talking about how the characters are developed in the novel as well as what motivates their decisions.

Math 7 & Pre-Algebra: We spent our week working on adding and subtracting integers, while also hitting a little review with unit rates and proportions. Next week we’ll learn to multiply and divide with integers before putting things all together to solve real world problems with our new skills. In Pre-Algebra, we also worked more with scientific notation operations that involve adding and subtracting integers as well as some real world problems involving scientific notation.

Check out our Spirit Week photos! Please remind your student to bring headphones to school. We are also hitting the time in the year where it will be helpful to check in on backpacks and make sure folders are in there with materials organized.

Social Studies: This week we continued our study of the 13 American colonies, focusing on the Middle and Southern Colonies. We discussed the beginnings of representative government and religious toleration/freedom, and we also started our hard discussion on the institution of chattel slavery in the Americas - focusing on the conditions forced on enslaved people on the Middle Passage and on Plantations. Next week we will be covering the Salem Witch Trials, just in time for Halloween, and we will have our first unit test on Friday

Health: Students had a wonderful time learning about one’s natural high & the risks of vaping from Trumansburg High School students representing the Natural High club. This coming week, students will learn facts about alcohol, tobacco, & marijuana and the health risks of use by young people. Classes will also have a guest speaker from TST BOCES share survey data that reports information about substance use as well as perceptions about safety and their community.

French (Ms. Cederstrom) Get ready for National French Week, happening from November 1st-8th! During this special week, French students will celebrate the French language and culture. We hope these activities will inspire everyone to discover the amazing world of French and the francophone community. Keep an eye out for more details about this awesome event!

Spanish (Ms. Cederstrom) This week, the Spanish students will be learning about El Día de Los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, a culturally vibrant holiday celebrated mostly in Mexico on November 1st and 2nd. We will explore the various customs and rituals associated with this holiday, such as building altars, gathering at cemeteries, eating a bread known as pan de muerto, and much more.

Chorus: Lesson Schedule MP1 (9.25.23) NEW GROUPS as of 10/10

Music: This past week, students finished up the assignment called ‘Genre Activity #3’ where they had to research an artist of their choice. We have been working on how to write short responses to the music that we listen to and had more practice with that as well. Music students are becoming masters at identifying songs by genre!

Regents Earth Science: Students have been learning how to classify different types of rocks based on their physical properties. We will wrap up our Minerals & Rocks Unit at the end of the week (11/3).

ELA 8: This week, we’ll be reading the Twilight Zone teleplay “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street”. We will first read about Rod Serling, making text-to-world and text-to-self connections. Students will volunteer for parts to read aloud this week. Those not reading will listen while taking notes on their confidential cases slide.

Troubadour

Dear Writers, Photographers, and Artists~

Are you interested in contributing to the Trumansburg Troubadour? The Trumansburg Troubadour is a school community newsletter written by students and supported by the Trumansburg Education Foundation. It is a great opportunity to have your work published and shared with the community. We are accepting submissions from students in grades 3-12 this fall.

In December, we will publish our regular Troubadour newsletter dedicated to school and community news and encourage students to choose one of the suggested topics below or a topic of their own related to school news/programs/events. Submissions should be half-page to full page in length with some flexibility (word count: 400-800 words).

We are also accepting creative stories, poetry, artwork, and photography for a Creative Edition of the Troubadour that will be published separately later this winter. Creative stories will need to be 800 words or less. Students are welcome to submit to both editions of the Troubadour if they would like.

The Troubadour will be compiled and edited virtually, though we may have opportunities to meet in person or individually. Submissions are typically submitted and edited using Google Docs. All interested contributors (grades 3-12), please contact trumansburgtroubadour@gmail.com with your topic ideas and questions by Friday, October 13, 2023. First drafts will be due by Friday, November 3, 2023, and all final submissions will be due by Friday, December 8, 2023.

We look forward to hearing from you!
