Office Updates

From Ms. Amodeo

Thank you to all of the families who took the time to meet with us during our conference days last week. It was a pleasure to see you! Please feel free to contact teachers directly, or to reach out to the Student Services office for a whole-team meeting at any point during the school year.

This week is Spirit Week! See the descriptions of specific events in the Student Council space below. Please select costumes with your student(s) and make sure that they are safe and appropriate for school. Thank you!

School Nutrition

Though school meals are no longer subsidized for every student, free and reduced-priced meals are available to those who qualify. The application can be found HERE.

To add funds to your child’s school lunch account, you can use our online system at MySchoolBucks or you can send a check directly to the TCSD Food Service Department. Students may always pay cash if they choose to as well.

5th Grade

5th Grade Daily Planner (Please bookmark for your use).

ELA: This week students took on the challenge to create their own questions to test the understanding of their peers in class with chapters 29, 30 and 31 in Front Desk. Students enjoyed playing “teacher” for this assignment and discovered how crafting a well constructed question can be tasking. Please remind students to continue to stay up to date with their weekly reading assignments for our novel and to bring their book back and forth from home to school.

Math: During the short week students learned how to multiply decimals by single digit whole numbers and use estimation to help with placement of the decimal in the product. This coming week we will divide decimals as we prepare to finish our unit on place value and decimal operations. Students should plan on having their end of unit test on Friday, 10/27.

Social Studies This week we shared our Early American Book Creator projects and gave feedback on our peer’s books. We also began our unit on Ancient Mesoamerican cultures.

Science: Our solar system has lots of cool stuff in it, not just planets. Ask your kiddo, and maybe they’ll sing you a song about the eight planets in our solar system. (Warning: It’s an earworm!) Your student can also show you the writing they did last week about moon phases and the grade they received on it.

Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule Students have learned to assemble their instruments and to play a few notes - maybe even Hot Cross Buns. Please help your student remember to return the plastic mouthpiece that we started with.

Art: Local Art show: check out the artwork from our 5th grade & 8th grade Studio art students at the Ulysses Philomathic Library, it will be available for viewing for the next couple weeks.

THRIVE: After-school tutoring has started!. Fill out this form to sign-up.

** 5th Grade Dance Party - Thursday Oct. 26th from 2:15-3:30. There was a purple flier that came home on Thursday with your child with the details - please fill out the back of the flier and return to your child’s homeroom teacher on Monday. Students can leave at the normal dismissal time (2:45) or opt to stay until 3:30. We need to know ahead of time how many students will need to ride the late bus home on Thursday.

7th Grade

7th Grade Digital Planner (Please bookmark this link.)

Please remind students to bring pencils, their Chromebook charger, and a water bottle to school.

Science: This week we learned more about organelles (cell structures) in plant and animal cells. Some students made clay models of cells while others preferred coloring but everyone made a shrinky dink model of a plant cell. It was nice to be able to be artistically creative and learn the structures at the same time.

ELA 7: In terms of skills, we are focusing on improving our writing fluency, actively participating in reader’s theater to improve reading fluency, demonstrating our reading comprehension by writing summary sentences, and making and supporting inferences by writing short responses to the text. Our focus text continues to be the book Hello, Universe. Students are expected to reading 2 chapters each day for homework and to answer 2 literal comprehension questions in complete sentences per chapter each night. We are having powerful conversations about how we treat other people as well as why the author tells the story from different perspectives.

Rattenborg’s Small Class ELA 7: We are continuing reading and discussion related to the book, Hello, Universe. Students are exploring how different characters in the book respond to stressful life events, and writing evidence based paragraphs. Students should be reading a chapter a day for HW during the week and answering questions.

Math 7: This week we kicked off our unit on Integers. Students also received their Ratio & Proportion test back and worked on corrections and extensions. We received a certificate for answering 30,000 math questions in IXL. The foundation for this unit is having confidence with math facts and general number sense so we have been practicing these skills in class. Starting this week we will need headphones. Please remind your child to bring corded headphones to school to keep in their backpack. We learned how to change a fraction to a decimal and investigated some fun patterns. Our Google Classroom contains a master note packet for this unit that I’m adding to as we go. Consider it a textbook resource to support at home. Here is the link. Note it is also available for you and your student in the weekly planner.

Pre-Algebra: We kicked off our new unit on Integers and received our Ratio and Pproportion test back and worked on corrections and extensions. We received a certificate for answering 30,000 math questions in IXL. With our new knowledge of how to add integers, we circled back to multiplying with scientific notation and found we could answer more questions. Our Google Classroom contains a master note packet for this unit that I’m adding to as we go. Consider it a textbook resource to support at home. Here is the link. Note it is also available for you and your student in the weekly planner. Starting this week we will need headphones. Please remind your child to bring corded headphones to school to keep in their backpack. We also investigated some fun patterns when we learned how to change a fraction to a decimal.

Health: Students will begin the final unit of the quarter: tobacco, alcohol and other drug prevention this week. Lessons will have the students examine their beliefs about drug use among teens, compare their perceptions to actual norms, and discuss the influence of perceived norms on behaviors. THS’s Natural High Club will deliver a presentation to share their vision–to help young people discover the core activities in their lives that uplift, inspire, and motivate them — to find their ‘Natural High’ rather than use alcohol or drugs and to share a presentation on the risks of vaping. If you’d like, check out this source: https://www.naturalhigh.org/for-parents/.

ELA 8: Students should have finished Touching Spirit Bear. They’ve finished posters analyzing symbolism in the book using Canva. They have moved on to developing 3-5 songs for a Touching Spirit Bear “soundtrack” (due: 10/23).

Letters regarding the Washington DC trip were sent home along with progress reports. Please read over the letter and eligibility policy with your child at home. Send in the slip indicating whether your child plans to attend the DC trip this spring. Students will be attending a meeting regarding the trip on Friday Nov. 17th where more details about the trip will be shared. There will be a meeting for parents in the spring with finalized details. If you have any questions please reach out to Bill Begeal at wbegeal@tburg.k12.ny.us

Troubadour

Dear Writers, Photographers, and Artists~

Are you interested in contributing to the Trumansburg Troubadour? The Trumansburg Troubadour is a school community newsletter written by students and supported by the Trumansburg Education Foundation. It is a great opportunity to have your work published and shared with the community. We are accepting submissions from students in grades 3-12 this fall.

In December, we will publish our regular Troubadour newsletter dedicated to school and community news and encourage students to choose one of the suggested topics below or a topic of their own related to school news/programs/events. Submissions should be half-page to full page in length with some flexibility (word count: 400-800 words).

We are also accepting creative stories, poetry, artwork, and photography for a Creative Edition of the Troubadour that will be published separately later this winter. Creative stories will need to be 800 words or less. Students are welcome to submit to both editions of the Troubadour if they would like.

The Troubadour will be compiled and edited virtually, though we may have opportunities to meet in person or individually. Submissions are typically submitted and edited using Google Docs. All interested contributors (grades 3-12), please contact trumansburgtroubadour@gmail.com with your topic ideas and questions by Friday, October 13, 2023. First drafts will be due by Friday, November 3, 2023, and all final submissions will be due by Friday, December 8, 2023.

We look forward to hearing from you!
