Office Updates

From Mrs. Lomax

I hope that all of our middle school families enjoyed a restful break filled with gratitude.

School Nutrition

We are pleased to announce that all school meals are now free for Trumansburg CSD students. Our district has been granted the mid-year community eligibility provision (CEP), a federal and state grant subsidy that covers the expense of student meals. We are more than ecstatic to provide free nutritious meals to our student population, alleviating the financial burden on our families. Additional items beyond the daily meal will still be available for separate purchase should students so desire. Many thanks to our school lunch personnel who work tirelessly to provide our students with nutritious and appetizing meals. Their commitment is essential to the education and overall health of our student body. Thank you for the positive impact you make every day. We look forward to seeing all students in the lunch line!

ELA: This week students worked more with figurative language and focused on idioms. We also practiced responding to various events in our novel by using the Say Something reading strategy and Emoji Reactions. We will be finishing our novel up when we come back from Thanksgiving break!

Social Studies:This week we continued to learn about the Mayan civilization. We focused on their Politics, Economics, and Social Structure. We also learned about their calendar and hieroglyphic writing system.

Science: Has your student shown you stellarium-web, the website we used to see stars and constellations? It. Is. Awesome. After Thanksgiving we will have a big astronomy wrap-up, then switch to chemistry. Woot!

Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule 5th grade band students should be able to perform Hot Cross Buns and Mary Had a Little Lamb for their families! Ask for a performance! :) We are learning a 5 note scale and also how to read real musical notation in our Making Music Matter method books. Most students are on Lesson 1 or 2. Please encourage short, frequent practice sessions. Thanks for your support.

Social Studies: We have begun exploring paleolithic and neolithic time periods. Students discussed what makes humans human. They also played a simulation game to see if they would survive that time period. Ask your child if they survived and why. On Monday we celebrated Diwali with rice pudding and chai tea made by the Localvore room. Some students loved it.

Science: We are finishing up our unit on weather. Students have been recording the weather every day and trying to see patterns in the weather. We looked at what meteorologists use to predict weather. We had a lot of fun on Tuesday when we investigated our elvins (trout babies). Ask your student why they do not have mouths yet.

ELA: We began the week discussing themes of Lightning Thief. We moved into Joseph Campbell’s work on a “Hero’s Journey” and how most books and movies follow this structure. Students picked their hero’s journey free read book that they will start reading after break. Students will be setting a reading calendar and completing assignments for their book.

Math 7 & Pre-Algebra: This week in Math 7 we learned about Box & Whisker Plots, ending with an open notes assessment to help students understand the importance of saving their materials and using them for support. In Pre-Algebra, we worked more with our transformations of shapes in addition to our Box & Whisker plot work. Our week also concluded with a short assessment. Our Box Plot work in all classes involved getting our own data with push-ups and jumpking jacks. t After break we’ll begin our very hefty Equations and Expressions Unit. It will be very important to attend each day for this unit, as the work builds quickly and layers on itself.

Algebra: This week we finished up looking at linear functions. Topics included rate of change, graphing, and explaining the context of various parts of an equation. After vacation we will move onto graphing linear inequalities and systems.

Math 8: This week we finished up our unit on rigid motion. This involved translating, reflecting, and rotating a figure around the coordinate plane. Students worked to use accurate language in their descriptions when explaining their thought process. After break we will explore non-rigid motion through dilations.

Science 8: We have been looking at energy transfer in materials. Your student should be able to explain to you how and why your drink cans would get cool when placed in a cooler full of ice.

Regents Earth Science: We have been learning about physical and chemical weathering and the process of soil formation. When we return from break we will begin looking at the erosional processes on earth.

Kotler’s ELA 8: Reading chapters 4-9 of Lois Lowry’s The Giver. Students should be reading outside of class, following along with their ind. reading questions. Wednesday, students had time to find an independent reading book for MP2, as well as work on their independent reading project (for the books read during MP1) -- ind. reading projects are due 12/12. Thursday, students took a look at characters in The Giver, distinguishing between flat & round characters and status and dynamic. Friday, students had a creative writing activity and time to update ePortfolios.

Social Studies: We wrapped up the week by finishing our unit on Big Business & Labor. Our final assessment was hexagonal thinking. Students made connections (in the shape of hexagons) with terms such as monopoly, industrializing, laissez-faire, labor union, capitalism. Students picked 3 different connections to explain with details & examples.
