Office Updates

From Mrs. Lomax

Report cards will be sent home on this Friday, 11/17. Please take some time to review this feedback with your student(s). As always, do not hesitate to contact your student’s teachers or the Student Services Office (607-387-7551 x 1449) with any questions or concerns.

From time to time it can be helpful to review our school rules and remind students of our expectations. The 23-24 Student Handbook can be found on the MS website HERE. Please help us keep school safe and focused on learning by advising students that “Only water is permitted in water bottles. Caffeinated products are not permitted to be brought in, consumed, or sold during the school day.” Also, “Students are not permitted to use a cell phone at any time during the school day. Cell phones need to be stored in lockers.”

Again, we thank you for your help and support in order to keep our students healthy and learning here at the middle school.

School Nutrition

We are pleased to announce that all school meals are now free for Trumansburg CSD students. Our district has been granted the mid-year community eligibility provision (CEP), a federal and state grant subsidy that covers the expense of student meals. We are more than ecstatic to provide free nutritious meals to our student population, alleviating the financial burden on our families. Additional items beyond the daily meal will still be available for separate purchase should students so desire. Many thanks to our school lunch personnel who work tirelessly to provide our students with nutritious and appetizing meals. Their commitment is essential to the education and overall health of our student body. Thank you for the positive impact you make every day. We look forward to seeing all students in the lunch line!

ELA: This week students were able to try on the ‘teacher hat’ and created their own questions to challenge a peer in class with the most recent reading chapters in Front Desk. This is a great way to practice comprehension skills, identifying main ideas and details. Also students defined figurative language, its different forms and identified them in our novel.

Social Studies: This week we began our research of the Mayan civilization. We used a variety of articles and web sites to examine this ancient empire.

Social Studies: Whew! What a fun week in social studies class. Students were able to have the Johnson Art Museum’s Carol Hockett visit and bring art work to show off that depicted Greek Mythology. Students were able to analyze the art work and connect to the myths they have learned about. We also set up our e-portfolios to get ready for the next few years. We ended the week with amazing VR headsets and traveled to Greece to see ruins and explore Greece right from Trumansburg!

Math: Students have been working hard on finishing up part 1 of expressions and equations. Students will have a BMR (Basic Math Review) assigned on Monday and due on Friday.

Science: We worked hard this week-we finished an investigation to show air movement that creates wind. We also looked at what is happening in clouds to make hail form. We ended the week with an assessment. Students had to complete an assessment that asked them to transfer all of their knowledge about hail storms and transfer it to hurricane’s.

ELA: We are finishing Lightning Thief! Students should finish the book by Monday. We started looking at what a theme is. Students will start next week looking at themes in Lightning Thief as well as filling in a plot diagram. After Thanksgiving break students will have the opportunity to pick their own Hero’s Journey free read book.

Please remind students to bring pencils, their Chromebook charger, and a water bottle to school.

Science: The first marking period wrapped up with learning that most bacteria are good! On Friday we went outside to identify trees to begin our unit on plants.

ELA 7: We are working on writing an essay about the novel, Hello, Universe. It is due before students go on vacation; the due date is officially Friday, November 17th. We are working on planning and writing the essay during class. The assignment is in Google Classroom.

Rattenborg’s Small Class ELA 7: Please see the 7th Grade Digital Planner for live updates on what we are doing in class and what HW is assigned.

Math 7 We had an assessment on the number system on Thursday. After the 3 day weekend, we’ll do a one week dive into statistics using our own class data! We’ll learn how to construct box plots, read box plots with outliers and more. Following the Thanksgiving break, we’ll spend December working on our Equations and Expressions unit. We will circle back to statistics again in the winter. Please support your student with their weekly assignment. Video solutions and answers are provided for the kids. I hope this helps make it so that your role can be to help them get into a habit of completing their work, checking it against solutions, and helping to build strong habits around effort instead of having to instruct at home. View our weekly agenda slides here.

& Pre-Algebra: Pre-Algebra also had an assessment Thursday and we’ll also get into statistics for the week before Thanksgiving. We’re also working with translations, reflections, and rotations of points and shapes. In addition to the Math 7 weekly assignment mentioned above, we’lll have additional at home work around the Geometry portion of our learning. Students need to plan their time well to complete all the work for this accelerated course. View our weekly agenda slides here.

Chorus: 5-12 Winter Chorus Concert is 12/12 @ 7:00 PM in the HS Auditorium

Music: This past week, we wrote our own assessment (to be taken this week). We created a musical genre quiz in Kahoot!

8th Grade

Parents: Reminder--Students should be emailing their teachers when absent -- that way they can know what was covered in class. Also please follow the below steps to check assignments in your child’s Google Classrooms.

Algebra: This week we continued to discuss linear functions. Students should be able to calculate the rate of change and y-intercept of a line given a table, graph, or equation.

Math 8: We started our unit on transformations. Students worked on translating (slide) a shape from one location to another. We also started reflecting (flip) a shape over a given line. Students should be focusing on their use of language when describing their actions. For example… the shape moved “left 2” instead of “over 2” to indicate direction. Also, “I reflected the shape over the y-axis” rather than “I flipped it”. Next week we finish reflections and move onto rotations.

Science 8: We have been studying particles in solids, liquids, and gasses. We wrapped up our investigations with an assessment this week. We will start investigating transfer of energy in our next unit.

Regents Earth Science: We have finished our unit of study on minerals and rocks. Students have proven able to identify minerals and rocks based on their characteristics and did quite well on their ID test. Our next unit of study will be on weathering, erosion, and landscapes. Our area here in the Finger Lakes are perfect for this unit of study.

Kotler’s ELA 8: A weekly agenda is now available at the top of the Google Classroom stream. This week, we will begin reading Lois Lowry’s The Giver. Students are expected to follow along with guided reading questions (answering in complete sentences).

Rattenborg’s Small Class ELA: We wrote an essay on Hello, Universe in class.

Social Studies: Students created some clever & original political cartoons on J.D. Rockefeller or Andrew Carnegie, depicting them either as “creative capitalists” or “ruthless robbers”. We then moved on to discuss workers during this time and how many turned to labor unions to better their working conditions and pay.
