Office Updates

From Ms. Lomax

I'm sad to report that, recently, there have been instances where some of our older students have used inappropriate and/or racially insensitive language at school. While some boundary-testing in this area is typical (middle schoolers have gotten in trouble for swearing since the dawn of time), what we are hearing now is more concerning: references to slavery, Hitler, misogynistic figures, etc. As educators, we take these matters seriously and are committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all students.

To address this issue, Mr. Megivern and I will be speaking to our 7th and 8th graders later this week. We will discuss the impact of their words and the importance of treating each other with respect and dignity.

We encourage you to have conversations with your student(s) about the importance of using appropriate language, and showing kindness and empathy toward others. Together, we can work towards creating a school community where every individual feels valued and respected. Thank your continued support in this endeavor.

5th Grade Daily Planner (Please bookmark for your use). Please check your students’ take home folders and planners with them daily. Calling ALL PENCILS!!! Please remind students to bring spare pencils from home with them to school (either daily) or to store in their lockers! We are giving them the same messages here at school. THANK YOU!!!

ELA: This week students finalized their WSKG Writing Challenge Entry and free-writing unit. We began our Perseverance Unit where we will be reading historical fiction novels in Literature Circle Groups. Students will have 15 days to read and log about their novel. This work will need to be completed mostly outside of class and will require students to bring their novels back to school daily.

Math: This week students classified quadrilaterals based on their attributes. We also reviewed some skills in preparation for the state test next week in math on Tuesday and Wednesday. We're excited to see the students show off their amazing math knowledge!

Social Studies: This week students examined the impacts of European exploration on the Native Americans that interacted with the Europeans. We also began looking at the Columbian Exchange.

Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule Please mark your calendars - Our 5/6 Band and Chorus concert is Thursday May 16 at 7 pm at the HS auditorium. Students will be asked to arrive around 6:45 to get ready.

Health: Take a look at all the garden clean up work (pictures here) your students did on Monday! Students also practiced skills to evaluate a health website for accuracy & reliability, learned what defines chronic and infectious disease, researched one chronic disease, and outlined preventative steps for reducing the risk of diseases. Next week, students will learn about violence and injury prevention with a focus on these topics: conflict resolution, bullying, and fights.

Please remind students to bring pencils, their Chromebook charger, and a water bottle to school.

Science: We completed an overview of human body systems and studied the digestive system in depth. We had lots of station work this week where we looked at skeletons and organ models. Students enjoyed trying to put the organs back in the human model!

ELA 7: This past week, we have jumped back in time to the mid-1970s. We are reading the novel All the Broken Pieces about Matt Pin, who came to America because of Operation Babylift. He is in seventh grade, loves practicing his instrument (the piano), and is trying out for the baseball team. His potential teammates don’t like him and bully him verbally because he’s from Vietnam and looks very different from them. We will talk about how name calling and mean words dehumanize others, and conversely, we will explore how we can talk to others in a respectful way.

Math 7 & Pre-Algebra: We wrapped up our review game that used RISK as the base this week - View the round structure. The grade-level color teams had a good time challenging each other in the different rounds. In a nutshell, there were multiple rounds, each with different requirements to battle. Some were individual on behalf of a team, some required collaboration, and all required doing math problems. It was fun to see the teamwork, and the challenges gave some small breaks with little rewards for solving problems. View our video. This week, we will take the state test on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please make sure your child gets plenty of rest and a nice breakfast. We’ll move into Geometry in both Math 7 and Pre-Algebra, with Pre-Algebra taking a faster pace through the material. The last IXL Challenge wrapped and we’ll hear this week if we won anything. Regardless of those results, we’ll have some prizes and certificates for students. Our last challenge for the year started today - it runs through June 21st with leaderboards for each class and the full grade - the focus - Number of CORRECT questions covering grade levels 5-8.

Social Studies: This week we started a new unit on 19th century reform movements. We started the week talking about the working conditions in factory mills, and ended the week with a station activity on 19th century inventions.

Music: We will be continuing our journey through BandLab this week learning about and creating a project to demonstrate how to use tempo, dynamics & instrument families in BandLab. Students have been creating some very interesting work!
