Office Updates

From Ms. Amodeo

Congratulations to all of the middle school students who had work featured in the Art and STEAM Showcase last week. It was an amazing event.

This Monday and Thursday, the middle school will be conducting our final iReady screenings in reading and math. These screenings are required in order to determine which students will be assigned extra academic support. Please encourage your student(s) to do their best. The final results along with the benchmarks from the fall and winter will be sent home with students’ final report cards in June. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at: jamodeo@tburg.k12.ny.us

Service Day: Volunteers Needed

We will hold our annual Service Day on Friday, June 2nd (rain date: June 16th). This is a great opportunity for our middle schoolers to help out the school and wider community! We are looking for parent volunteers to help us on June 2nd. If you are interested, please contact Gail Brisson at gbrisson@tburg.k12.ny.us.

School Nutrition

Though school meals are no longer subsidized for every student, free and reduced-priced meals are available to those who qualify. The application can be found HERE.

To add funds to your child’s school lunch account, you can use our online system at MySchoolBucks or you can send a check directly to the TCSD Food Service Department. Students may always pay cash if they choose to as well.

5th Grade Daily Planner (Please bookmark for your use)

Charge Chromebooks, bring pencils & water bottles, check planners. Wash, rinse, repeat. Thank you.

ELA: Monday we started full speed ahead with our Literature Circle Group and historical fiction novels. Students were given their book & calculated how many pages they will be reading DAILY (both in and outside of class) in order to finish the book in 15 DAYS! Students also discovered they will need to not only read and log DAILY but will have additional jobs assigned along the way. Students should be bringing their newest historical fiction book from school to home and back again EACH day! Their reading logs (which show daily responsibilities) should be kept in their Take Home Folders. Each day they should come to class prepared with having read a specific part of their novel and summarized the info to be shared with their Literature Circle Group. Please encourage your child to keep up with their reading and have them share the daily happenings of their characters/settings.

Math: This past week we said goodbye to our lessons on classifying quadrilaterals and calculating missing angles and began constructing coordinate systems on plane. This coming week we will continue to practice naming points using coordinate pairs and using coordinate pairs to plot points. At the end of the week the students will show off all of their amazing knowledge in our Spring iReady Diagnostic.

Science: Monday is “Hatch Day,” and we hope to hear peeping coming from the incubator on Monday and Tuesday! We will start the week by investigating seeds. Can we find the embryo? What else is in a seed? Is a seed similar to a chicken egg? While our seeds are sprouting, we will turn our attention to the final unit of the year: Evolution, Natural Selection and Inheritance. We can start our unit with the question, “How did there get to be so many different kinds of chickens?”

ELA 7: We continued reading All the Broken Pieces this week. We really focused on writing clear summary sentences about the poems. This coming week we will focus on how the author develops the theme in the novel.

Music: We have learned 5 chords on guitar! We have been practicing them and seeing how fast we can switch from 1 chord to the next. Very soon, we will be learning our first song. Rock on!

7/8 Band: What a busy time in the music world! We only have 6 more rehearsals before the concert! NYSSMA is 5/19 & 5/20. Please sign up to help- there are lots of jobs for adults AND students! Click here to sign up

Algebra: We are using the large review book to support our Bingo Review by topic. We introduced it in class on Friday. Ask your child about how this works. It will be ongoing until the exam. View our agenda for May 15-19. Please encourage your child to do a little work on Bingo Review every night and to complete things in Google Classroom.

Math 8: This week we are wrapping up our scatterplot / trend line unit. There will be a quiz at the end of the week.

ELA 8: Students are preparing for interviews. This week, they’re expected to reach out and confirm their interview subjects, and, then, create questions. These interviews will be the final submission for ePortfolios (students will conference over ePortfolio for their end-of-year assessment). This week, we will also add to Holocaust notes, considering the ideologies and conditions that made the Holocaust possible (students will write an essay on this topic). Interviews are due May 30th

Students in Social Studies refer to Holocaust timeline to determine what laws & decrees directly impacted the person they researched last week in ELA.

Social Studies: After concluding our work on the Holocaust timeline, we talked about the reasons why the U.S. got involved in the war & what impact that had on the American home front. Students were able to hear President Roosevelt’s address to the nation after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Health 8: Students were introduced to the unit: abstinence, puberty & personal health this week. Having composed a list of needs for a safe and comfortable learning environment while discussing sexual health topics, students framed the expectations for the class. Students learned the broad definition of sexuality, viewed a few Amaze.org videos to normalize the teenage experience, and studied the reproductive systems. Questions that guided the learning: Why is it important to have a trusted adult to talk to about sexual health? Where do people get accurate & reliable information about sexual health? Why is it important that we use correct terms for body parts? What practices are important to ensuring reproductive health? A guest community health educator joined class on Friday in order to share and discuss results from the 2021 Clyde Survey that Trumansburg students participated in that year. Note: If your child missed Health class, encourage them to see me and Google classroom for more information.

7/8 Band: What a busy time in the music world! We only have 6 more rehearsals before the concert! NYSSMA is 5/19 & 5/20. Please sign up to help- there are lots of jobs for adults AND students! Click here to sign up
