Office Updates
From Ms. Lomax
Last Friday, Mr. Megivern and I (along with a number of MS staff) met with our 7th and 8th grade students to discuss the definition of hate speech, the Dignity for All Students Act, and our expectation that everyone at the middle school treat each other with respect. We encourage you to discuss the assembly with your student(s) and have conversations with them about being kind and finishing the school year positively and productively.
We are excited for the many special events coming up including -- this week -- NYSSMA competitions for our students in band, the 5/6 Spring Concert on Thursday at 7pm, and Bike/Walk to School Day on Friday.
Good luck to all of the students performing!

5th Grade Daily Planner (Please bookmark for your use). Please check your students’ take home folders and planners with them daily. Calling ALL PENCILS!!! Please remind students to bring spare pencils from home with them to school (either daily) or to store in their lockers! We are giving them the same messages here at school. THANK YOU!!!
ELA: This week in ELA, students became more involved with their historical fiction novels and their literature circle groups. Students should be bringing home their book and logs each afternoon where they record their daily reading assignments in summary form.
Science: Your students built a working model of the human cardiopulmonary system. Really. Ask them. Also, we have a field trip to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology coming up on May 20th & 21st. If you didn’t see the info about this, ask your student.
Math: This week the students did an amazing job completing their state test. We were so proud of the effort and perseverance they showed. With the state test in our rear view, we are now looking at our last math module of 5th grade: coordinate systems. Students spent time constructing a coordinate system on a plane. Next week students will continue to deepen their understanding of using coordinate pairs to plot points.
Social Studies: This week we looked at the “hard history” of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. We examined the factors that led to it, the conditions of the Middle Passage, and its lasting impact on the Americas. I was very impressed with the maturity and compassion that these 5th graders showed when faced with this part of history.
Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule Our concert is Thursday May 16 at 7 pm. Penny Band will rehearse from 6:15 sharp to 6:30. Students should arrive by 6:30. HERE is the concert plan for students.

Health: Great conversations were had this week about the impacts of bullying. Students shared ideas about how to protect themselves and others, and learned steps to ensure a safer community for all. Next week we will continue to explore topics related to violence and injury protection: fights, when friends need help, media messages & casual cruelty, and use creativity for a project-based health advocacy campaign.

***Students will be going on a field trip to Cornell on May 29th. We will be visiting The Johnson Art Museum and STEAM departments.
Social Studies: Students finished writing their essay that compares two monotheistic religions. We were lucky enough to have The Johnson Art Museum visitors to talk to us about Pompei. We also had a presentation about seventh grade for students. They started thinking about what language they want to take and what music they will take next year.
Math: Students took the math state test this week. We began combining algebra and geometry to make equation switch formulas.
Science: This week in science has us wrapping up our Earth Resources & Human Impact unit. Students worked on a cause and effect chain model to help explain the increases in wildfires, melting of multi-year ice, droughts, floods, and other natural disasters. We discussed the importance of examining information conveyed through social media to determine if there was evidence to support claims being made. Students conducted an at home Carbon Audit and used an online evaluation tool to identify ways that they could help reduce their own carbon footprint. At the end of the week we started the investigation of our last unit - Earth in Space. We began to investigate what is happening with Manhattanhenge.
ELA: Students continued to read Flush and we will begin literature circles next week. We also wrote “So much depends upon …” poems inspired by William Carlos Williams.
Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule Big week for us! Please see info for our NYSSMA Majors trip HERE. Please see the concert plan HERE. Please encourage your student to practice their band music. It makes a difference. :)

Please remind students to bring pencils, their Chromebook charger, and a water bottle to school.
Science: Students made a Google Slides or Canva presentations on one of the animal phyla. I am looking forward to a gallery walk where everyone can look at each other's phyla/presentation and compare these animals to humans.
ELA 7: This week we continued reading and learning about the Vietnam War and how it affected the veterans as well as our main character, Matt Pin. We have increased our background knowledge about music and baseball. We are also learning that poetry can be our friend; All the Broken Pieces is a novel in verse.
Math 7 & Pre-Algebra: We started work with Geometry this week in both Math 7 and Pre-Algebra. Students are learning a lot of new vocabulary quickly. They have paper notes sheets each day and are expected to keep them in their folders. Pre-Algebra students have reached the point in Geometry where they are applying this vocabulary to solve problems by creating equations. All math students have had their pencils restocked - I expect them to come to class prepared with their materials. Portfolios of their work were sent home Friday along with their activity bulletin board images. This week we’ll continue our work with Geometry, to include some short assessments. Please have students bring headphones/earbuds next week. We’ll need them in class on a few occasions.
Social Studies: TThis week in Social Studies, we learned about the many reform movements of the 19th century. We also started our next project. Working in pairs, each student is creating a Google Slide deck on a reform movement of their choice and will present their slide deck to the class at the end of next week
