Office Updates

From Ms. Amodeo

It has been great having students back in the building this week. We are all enjoying the extended daylight; don’t forget that Daylight Savings Time begins on Sunday, 3/12.

In last week’s newsletter I mentioned that our district is looking to provide additional support for families who want to more closely monitor their students’ online activity. Please complete the survey HERE to let us know what you are interested in hearing more about.

School Nutrition

Though school meals are no longer subsidized for every student, free and reduced-priced meals are available to those who qualify. The application can be found HERE.

To add funds to your child’s school lunch account, you can use our online system at MySchoolBucks or you can send a check directly to the TCSD Food Service Department. Students may always pay cash if they choose to as well.

Please remind students to bring a reusable water bottle to fill up at school. Students need pencils! Please send your student in with a few pencils! Healthy snacks are a great idea to send in with your student, they are growing at a rapid rate.

Social Studies: We are having so much fun creating projects to share our learning about Ancient China. We have been having some email issues lately, so here is a letter I hope you received this week. Projects are due on 3/7. On Wednesday, March 8th, we will have all of our exhibits set up to share. There will be tea and snacks served.

Math: We began a new unit on algebraic equations. Students will also be working on long division. We will be adding decimals to the long division.

Science: We have begun exploring weather phenomena. Students developed driving questions for exploring weather.

ELA: Students continue to read Flush, and are enjoying writing summaries about the chapters. Next week students will begin to read non-fiction articles focusing on water. Students will pick one topic to focus on and will be writing persuasive letters to Congress.

Health: Students just concluded a week learning about fitness and nutrition, disease prevention, and the importance of good hygiene. Next week kicks off our new unit: Communication and Healthy Relationships. Topics for the week will include effective communication, conflict resolution, how to identify and interrupt bullying.

This Friday, March 10th, 7th Graders will be going to the Clemens Center in Elmira to watch a play about Harriet Tubman. We will return to school in time for lunch. Students will only have classes periods 7-9.

Science: Students finished the New York State Lab, “Is It Alive?” which gave them an opportunity to look at many interesting prepared slides of different types of cells. This week students will be designing and carrying out an investigation on bacteria.

ELA 7: This week we shared our “Breaking Stereotypes Projects” in class. Students did an amazing job identifying stereotypes for their group (animal or human) and then breaking the stereotype open with facts. After the presentations, we talked about how stereotypes are shared through the stories that we tell. This coming week we will read Ghost Boys in class, and students will continue to read to meet their reading goals.

Music: We have had some interesting class discussions about segregation, Jim Crow Laws, and how music played an important role in the Civil Rights Movement. We continue to watch ‘The Two Killings of Sam Cooke’ and will finish this week.

7/8 Band: NYSSMA information was e-mailed to families this week. Please have a conversation with your student to see if they would like to participate, and ask if they have let Mrs. Robertson know that they would like to participate. Check your e-mail for more details!
