Office Updates

From Ms. Amodeo

We are thrilled to have so many upcoming educational and entertaining events at the middle school. On Wednesday, 3/22, all students will see a short preview of the middle school musical, Beauty and the Beast. Regular performances run Friday through Sunday. Tickets can be purchased in the Main Office.

Thursday, 3/30, is the STEAM Career Day for our 5th and 6th graders. Currently, over 15 presenters from a variety of STEAM fields in the area are scheduled to speak with our students and guide them through hands-on activities.

On Friday, 3/31, all students will attend a "Resilience to Rise Above" assembly. The presentation focuses on three qualities that allow teens to be more resilient: leaning on positive people for support, coping with emotions in a healthy way, and having the confidence to rise above. You can find more information at: https://www.mattbellace.com/

Finally, also on 3/31, the Swamp College Brass Band is offering a performance to our band students and a few other classes.

We are fortunate to have so many opportunities to offer to our students, and we are grateful for those who have worked hard to provide them. Thank you!!

School Nutrition

Though school meals are no longer subsidized for every student, free and reduced-priced meals are available to those who qualify. The application can be found HERE.

To add funds to your child’s school lunch account, you can use our online system at MySchoolBucks or you can send a check directly to the TCSD Food Service Department. Students may always pay cash if they choose to as well.

What’s for lunch? Check My School Menus

5th Grade

5th Grade Daily Planner (Please bookmark for your use)

Please help your 5th grader remember to charge their Chromebook each night, BRING PENCILS from home (please - we have a lot of kids reporting each day without one to use) and to bring a water bottle for use at school.

ELA: This week we finished up reading Promises to Keep, our Jackie Robinson nonfiction text. Our last step was to create our own class glossary for the book. Thus, students were assigned a word to add to our digital glossary including the page number, its definition according to the context of our book, a sentence using the word correctly along with a picture to represent its meaning.

STEAM: 5th and 6th graders will be participating in a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) Career Day on March 30th. We are looking for parent volunteers to do things like signing presenters into main office and escorting them to their rooms or helping to run a hospitality station. If you’re interested, please reach out to Heather Bascom: hbascom@tburg.k12.ny.us

6th Grade

6th grade planner (please bookmark this link)

Please remind students to bring a reusable water bottle to fill up at school. Students need pencils! Please send your student in with a few pencils! Healthy snacks are a great idea to send in with your student, they are growing at a rapid rate.

Social Studies: We began our comparative religion unit in social studies this week. The relevant state standards can be found here. This week we explored the history and basics of Hinduism and Buddhism. The next two weeks, we will begin learning about Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Students are working towards showing their learning in a compare and contrast essay.

Math: Students are learning to solve algebraic equations. They learned to balance the sides-what you do to one side you do to the other! We continue to work with decimals, we are dividing with decimals now. We also welcomed a student teacher from Ithaca College.

Science: Students continue to learn about weather. They are exploring air molecules and how they react when they are warmed up or cooled down. We are trying to answer the question of how this connects to hail storms.

ELA: What makes a good discussion question? We are forming Flush discussion questions. We also continued to read non-fiction articles about water. Ask your student how this connects to Flush?

Health: This week students practiced assertively responding to peer pressure scenarios and gained some steps for interrupting emotional triggers. 6th graders also learned techniques for resolving conflicts and identifying and handling situations that involve bullying. Our outreach educator from the Advocacy Center had to reschedule to next week, so we look forward to a lesson on avoiding exploitation on Tuesday. Later in the week we begin our lessons on human development and puberty.

Math: We have had a very short week between March 13 and March 16, with a snow day and a two hour delay! Nonetheless, we persevere. Our Math 7 students have finally begun working with percents as we start our unit on finances and money! This will eventually culminate with how to calculate things such as sales tax, interest, discounts, etc. Pre-Algebra has finally reached the pinnacle. They are officially done with 7th grade and have begun our 8th grade content by learning of exponents! What a week!

Social Studies: After discussing our first political parties with Hamilton and Jefferson, students will create their own political parties and video campaign ads using WeVideo. Students received review sheets on the U.S. Constitution. They will review Monday and take their Unit 4 Test: The Constitution on Tuesday.

Music: We are back into BandLab! We are finishing up an activity regarding matching music to emotions/feelings, and will be starting a graded mini-project to help prepare for the final project.

7/8 Band: The scale challenge has begun! We are onto Round 2: The B-flat and D scales. Students should be practicing/memorizing those 2 scales.

7/8 Lesson Schedule 3/20- 3/24

8th Grade

EELA 8: Last week, students chose a nonfiction/historical fiction book to read independently… ask them what they’ve chosen to read! This week, we will begin biography research for Women’s History Month, while continuing to study civil discourse (& prepare for a second Socratic Seminar next week).

Social Studies: We’ve been studying the causes of WWI and what got the U.S. involved -- this included students decoding the Zimmerman Telegram! We will be analyzing primary & secondary sources on what the war was like at the fronts and how it impacted the American homefront.

7/8 Band: The scale challenge has begun! We are onto Round 2: The B-flat and D scales. Students should be practicing/memorizing those 2 scales.
