Science: Time to turn the page from chemistry to biology. Please check in with your kiddo about our Mixtures and Solutions final mission, as well as our first looks into living systems. Also, March Mammal Madness is here! I am sorry that the link didn’t work in last week’s newsletter. Your student has a set of slides full of info in Google Classroom. Let them show you all about it!
ELA: This week students plowed through a large chunk of reading in our PTK text in order to discover more about Jackie Robinson’s military career, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the decision on why Jackie Robinson was chosen to break the color barrier in baseball along with his successes & struggles in the MLB. Ask your 5th grader what they may know about any of these discussion points.

Please remind students to bring a reusable water bottle to fill up at school. Students need pencils! Please send your student in with a few pencils! Healthy snacks are a great idea to send in with your student, they are growing at a rapid rate.
Social Studies: What a fun week in social studies as we traveled to Ancient China. Students were able to show off their amazing projects-raps, slide shows, videos, clay creations and posters! Students also practiced writing their names in characters as well as sampling candy, rice and tea.
Math: Students are venturing into the algebraic world. We started writing equations and are talking about balancing the equation. Next week we will tackle long division with decimals and solving algebraic equations.
Science: Students began to study why temperature is higher closer to the ground and colder the higher you go up. We were able to get outside and take temperature readings on three different surfaces.
ELA: Such a fun week in ELA. We continue to read Flush and look at the author's purpose for writing this book. We also introduced a few articles about water and microplastics in the water. Students had amazing conversations about the environment and how trash is impacting the oceans.
Health: Do ask your child to ASSERT the communication style that is the most effective & helpful to their health (answer: Assertive). And, see if they can tell you how to be assertive with a friend who may be pressuring them. Next week we welcome our School Counselor, Ms. Valletta who will direct a RULER lesson and Ms. Clark, an outreach educator from Tompkins County Advocacy Center, to help deliver a lesson on boundaries and avoiding online exploitation.

Shout out to our 7th graders! They were great on our trip this week to see the play about Harriet Tubman.
Science: Last week students had the opportunity to use medical lab testing plates to sample bacteria from around the school. We will start the week by looking at the results -–where are the most bacteria found at our school? We will then continue with our study of the human body systems.
Social Studies: Students this week are finishing up stations on Constitutional Principles and diving deeper into the First Amendment and what it looks like in our everyday lives. We are then covering our last learning objective of the unit on the first presidency and the first political parties. Friday we are going on a field trip to watch a play about Harriet Tubman and students will get a refresher in SS on Thursday about the legacy of Tubman.
ELA 7: This week we started reading Ghost Boys, and we started looking at characterization in the novel. Please encourage your 7th grader to read to meet their reading goals each week.
Ms. Cederstrom: Ms. Cederstrom’s students have been hard at work on the RUN! Project. This PBL involved planning and creating an instructional video to teach French/Spanish to our very own Trumansburg 2nd graders! Given that our target audience has no prior knowledge of the language, students were challenged to write a skit using a very limited set of vocabulary words related to the RUN! theme. They then needed to figure out a way to teach these words to their audience in an engaging and interactive way. After the initial planning stages were complete, many students collaborated with Ms. Brisson to shoot their video footage in front of a green screen (Thank you Ms. Brisson!). What a blast! Next, students uploaded their video footage into WeVideo and got to work on realizing their vision for the instructional video. Students have been working diligently to fine-tune their videos, which will soon be shared with the 2nd grade students!
Music: Students will be working on 2 short assignments which will help to review and prepare for the final project of our Composition unit.
7/8 Band: NYSSMA prep has begun! Students have chosen their music, and now it is time to dive in. Students have also created a practice goal for themselves in order to effectively prepare. Look for those practice goals to be e-mailed to families soon!
7/8 Lesson Schedule 3/13- 3/17
8th Grade
ELA 8: Students have begun preparing for a Socratic Seminar, discussing recent edits made to classic Roald Dahl works. We will also be discussing civil discourse and will soon prepare for an interview project, along with informational texts.
Social Studies: Students recently presented their Progressive Reformer posters. We spent a few days doing research, then went to the library where Ms. Brisson gave us pointers on how to make a CANVA poster illustrating a reformer, their issue and actions. We celebrated the incredible posters with an awards ceremony. Our next stop: WWI.
