Office Updates

From Ms. Amodeo

Welcome to 2023!

We were happy to welcome back students on Tuesday and host them for a successful dance on Friday night. Thank you to the members of the Student Council for organizing the fun.

As we are now in the last three weeks of the second marking period, it's a great time to check in with your student and their teachers about current progress and missing assignments, and to arrange for extra help after school on Tuesdays.

School Nutrition

Though school meals are no longer subsidized for every student, free and reduced-priced meals are available to those who qualify. The application can be found HERE.

To add funds to your child’s school lunch account, you can use our online system at MySchoolBucks or you can send a check directly to the TCSD Food Service Department. Students may always pay cash if they choose to as well.

Please help your 5th grader remember to charge their Chromebook and to bring a water bottle.

Science: This week we wrapped up the first part of “Mixtures and Solutions” by learning about extracts, drinking tea, and having a quiz. Thanks to everyone who sent in tea! Teams have also been working on a Black Box Challenge. Ask your scientist about the process for teams to create models of the inside of a black box that they observed, but could never open.

ELA: Happy New Year! This week in ELA we visited the library where we were challenged to choose a new genre free read book in honor of the new year. Students test drove their books on Thursday in order to commit to reading a book by February 3. Every Friday, students will need to turn in an assignment completed outside of class that reports on events or what they learned in their book via google classroom. They will have a Choice Board to help direct their ideas on what to report. Students received a bookmark to plan out their reading in order to stay on track each week and this can be found in their NEW FREE READ BOOK!

PLEASE encourage students to be reading at home to stay on track with this new book. We invite you to ask about what is happening with their book or new things they have learned. Conversations about reading are important ones that could happen as the day is winding down. Thank you for your support.

Social Studies: This week we continued our research on the Aztec civilization. We also had an opportunity to create a small Pre-Columbian Art Museum in our classroom using artifacts on loan from the Johnson Museum of Art.

Band: We will have an “Informance” (a low key performance and sharing what we’ve learned) on Wednesday February 8th at 7 pm in the the Middle School Gymnasium. Students should be practicing about 3 times per week and working on Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

World Languages: Ms. Cederstrom: Ms. Cederstrom’s students have been putting the finishing touches on the group stories that they started writing before break. We will be using these student-generated stories and comprehension questions to practice for the performance assessments scheduled for next Thursday and Friday.

7/8 Band: 7/8 Band: We are turning our focus to rhythm for the next few weeks! Students will be working on playing and labeling some tricky rhythms during lessons and rehearsal, getting ready for an upcoming rhythm assessment. We will be doing team-building exercises and going back to some basics during rehearsal in preparation for new band music coming soon!
