Office Updates

From Ms. Lomax

Happy New Year!! Welcome back!

We hope that all of our middle school families had a wonderful break.

The 5-week period ended on 12/20 and progress reports will be sent home with students on Monday, 1/8. Please take some time to review these reports with your student(s) and contact the school with any questions or concerns.

School Nutrition

We are pleased to announce that all school meals are now free for Trumansburg CSD students. Our district has been granted the mid-year community eligibility provision (CEP), a federal and state grant subsidy that covers the expense of student meals. We are more than ecstatic to provide free nutritious meals to our student population, alleviating the financial burden on our families. Additional items beyond the daily meal will still be available for separate purchase should students so desire. Many thanks to our school lunch personnel who work tirelessly to provide our students with nutritious and appetizing meals. Their commitment is essential to the education and overall health of our student body. Thank you for the positive impact you make every day. We look forward to seeing all students in the lunch line!

5th Grade Daily Planner (Please bookmark for your use). Please check your students’ take home folders and planners with them daily.

ELA: The week before break we wrapped up their Front Desk Motel Projects! We also enjoyed our Sparkly Pencil Reward Day and meeting our first 1st iReady Reading Goal for the school year! In the new year, we generated One Word Goals for 2024.

Math: Students began their first lessons on making equivalent fractions numerically, using models, and number lines. Students were asked to take their green module 2 problem set work books home today. See if they can share with you some of the skills learned in our second module. Next week we will learn how to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.

Social Studies: This week we began to research the Aztec civilization using our GRAPES research format. We will continue to work on this research next week as well.

Science: Last week our students completed one of New York State’s new required elementary science investigations. This was the focus question: What evidence indicates if a new substance is formed when an antacid tablet is added to water in a closed system? Pretty heady stuff for a 5th grader!

Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule Please mark your calendars for our “Twinkle Celebration” on Tuesday February 6th at 7 pm in the middle school gymnasium. The “Twinkle Celebration” is an “Informance” (an informal sharing/performance) for all 5th grade band members.

Social Studies: Students began exploring Ancient Egypt. They labeled a map and discussed what they noticed about Egypt. Ask them which way the Nile flows? We also looked at the different ruling families of Ancient Egypt. We will soon be starting research on Athens and Sparta to get ready for a big debate.

Math: Students spent the week with dependent and independent variables. We filled in charts and started graphing the variables. We will have a unit test next week. Students will be getting a review packet and it will be due Friday. Students can stay after school on Tuesday or Thursday if they would like help or to review. Students will also be getting quizzes back on Monday if they want to make corrections.

Science: Students began exploring Mount Everest to discover mountains are growing and moving. We will be investigating what makes them move. We continue to watch our trout grow and change.

ELA: The New Year has us starting a new book. We are reading New Kid by Jerry Croft as a class. This book is a graphic novel! We will be using this book to dig into big topics like microaggressions, themes, character development and metaphors. ELA 7: We ended 2023 by finishing up our personal narratives, and we’re starting the new year by diving into argument writing. This coming week we will examine what argument writing is and explore how authors create their arguments in mentor texts. As of January 3rd, seventh graders have read 965 books so far this year!!

Pre-Algebra students also did some work with the Pythagorean Theorem. The day before break we took a pause from our learning to enjoy a game day. View our pictures. Students got a small restock of their supplies before break with one pencil, and their reserve folder/notebook. Our iReady winter assessment will happen this coming Tuesday. Students are expected to document their work on provided scrap paper, and give their best effort. They saw the grading rubric on Friday in class, and can see it in Google Classroom. Next week we hit inequalities to wrap up Equations and Expressions and start our percent unit.

Social Studies: This week we wrapped up our unit on the American Revolution and began reviewing for our Unit 3 test, which will be next Wednesday (1/10)
