Office Updates

From Mrs. Lomax

This Friday (2/2) is the end of the second marking period and the half-way point of our school year. Report cards will be sent home on Friday, 2/9. It’s a great time to touch base with teachers regarding your student’s academic progress or any other questions or concerns you may have. Reach out by phone or email, or call the Student Services Office at (607) 387-7551, ext. 1449, to make an appointment with the grade-level team.

Since the weather has finally turned wintery, there is always the chance of a snow day or a delayed start to school. Make sure that the school has your correct phone number so you will be notified of any change to the school schedule.

5th Grade Daily Planner (Please bookmark for your use). Please check your students’ take home folders and planners with them daily. Calling ALL PENCILS!!! Please remind students to bring spare pencils from home with them to school (either daily) or to store in their lockers! We are giving them the same messages here at school. THANK YOU!!!

ELA: This week students finished up their New Years Around the World study by completing an informational poster that compared and contrasted their celebrations. We also enjoyed a book tasting (with special guest Ms. Brisson) to choose our next free read for the next month. Book choices are any type of genre, but African American and female authors are being featured.

Math: Students spent the week catching up on a variety of tasks. We updated our diagnostic information on IXL, made a new entry in our math notebooks on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, and wrapped up the week with adding and subtracting fractions to and from whole numbers. This is all to prep us for adding and subtracting mixed numbers, what is traditionally a heavy lift for 5th graders. We will have a practice assignment next week focusing on this skill and will plan an assessment during the week of February 5th.

Science: The third part of Mixtures & Solutions is about solutions and concentration levels. Students are likely to have reading assignments to complete outside of school. Kids can show you their cool online textbook. We also have a notebook check on Friday so please ask your kiddos if they need to stay after to catch up.

Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule We are preparing for our Twinkle Celebration on February 6th at 7 pm in the MS gymnasium. Please mark your calendars and also encourage practice several times per week.

Social Studies: Students researched the mummification process in Ancient Egypt. They also learned about social class and what jobs fit in each social class. Students created questions for a game we will play on Monday.

Math: We began reading and writing ratios. Students learned three ways to write a ratio. They practiced writing their own ratios. We will spend next week looking at data to write ratios and compare ratios.

Science: Last week we conducted a lab to look at what is on the surface of 5 major mountains and to look at what is below the surface. Students learned about bedrock, sediment, limestone, and granite.

ELA: We are learning how to write summaries about New Kid. We also looked at metaphors and similes. Ask your student what challenge we have given them. Everyone has a free read book they set goals for. They should be through the first week of their reading goal. Please check in to see if your student is completing the project or assignments for their book.

7th Grade

7th Grade Digital Planner (Please bookmark this link.)

Please remind students to bring pencils, their Chromebook charger, and a water bottle to school.

Science: Students became Punnett Square masters this week. These squares can predict the traits of offspring. All students looked at their grades, and we discussed ways to increase scores before the end of the Marking Period (2/2). The academic grades are on SchoolTool.

ELA 7: We began the week learning about how neuron pathways in our brain develop as we learn. Then we developed our neural pathways about writing an essay through different activities. By the end of the week, our ability to draw and label the parts of an essay has definitely improved. We will have a quiz on the essay structure on Monday, and we need to recreate the essay structure to mastery. This week we will also dive into argument essay writing. Please encourage your 7th grader to read for our 21 book challenge. If you have LEGO that you’re looking to get rid of, we’d love to use them in school.

Rattenborg’s Small Class ELA 7: We are reading The Giver and practicing writing CLEAR paragraphs. We will be writing our second essay of the year soon. There are chapters to read or listen to for HW on M/T/W.

Math 7 & Pre-Algebra: This week in Pre-Algebra we wrapped up our study of percents with discount and percent error, ending our week with an assessment. We’ll move into graphing linear equations next week. In Math 7 we will spend next week finishing up our study of percents with an assessment early in the week, followed by the final few lessons of the unit as the marking period draws to a close. When we took the IXL winter diagnostic, I had the students tally how many problems they got correct. Each class had a bin of blocks to represent their correct problems. On Friday we built structures as a visualization of just how much we got RIGHT on the assessment! View our video.

Social Studies: Hi everyone! This week we continued our investigation of the U.S. Constitution, with special focus on the Three Branches of Government. The students worked in groups throughout the week to analyze documents explaining the roles of the government, and on our Friday half-day, they had the opportunity to catch up on any missing work they may have. The marking period ends next Friday, so missing work needs to be turned in ASAP! Have an awesome weekend.

Chorus: MP2 Lesson Schedule / MP2 Lesson Groups

Music: This week, we presented our final projects in class by doing a gallery walk. Students walked around to look and listen to each other’s projects. There were a lot of interesting song choices that were presented nicely.

7/8 Band: We are now half way through the year! If your student is a reed player, please check to see that they have a supply or working reeds! 7th & 8th grade students should be playing on #3 reeds. There is a lot to practice! Students are getting started on their playing assessments during lessons. See google classroom and/or ask your student what they have chosen to play for their assessment! We are also hard at work on 2 band pieces with a 3rd one coming Monday. NYSSMA Solo & Ensemble Festival is May 3rd & 4th. Students will be getting NYSSMA information at their lessons this week and more details will be sent to families via email.

Science 8: We have moved on to Physics for the year, beginning with Speed and acceleration. We have had speed challenges in the hallway moving certain distances in a specific amount of time and doing comparisons of speed and acceleration. Students have been using some of their math skills and solving for v (speed) and graphing slope.

Regents Earth Science: We have learned about tsunamis, how they form, and their impact on people and communities that are on coastlines. We will wrap up the Unit this coming week.

Kotler’s ELA 8: Students are working on their own short stories. We’ve also read the short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. Looking for LEGO donations!

Rattenborg’s Small Class ELA: We are reading The Giver and practicing writing CLEAR paragraphs. We will be writing our second essay of the year soon. There are chapters to read or listen to for HW on M/T/W.

Social Studies: This past week we have discussed the sacrifices Americans made on both the war front and home front, along with document analysis.

Health 8: Last week students discussed key vocabulary – stigma, risk factor and barrier – important to understanding sexual activity and one’s health. As they continue to learn about how to prevent STIs, HIV and pregnancy, students will review scenarios to evaluate responsible decision-making, review refusal skills to be applied when feeling sexual pressure, understand the steps to correct condom use as well as understand various birth control methods. Health 8 concludes on 2/2 – this group has been wonderful to teach!
