Office Updates

From Ms. Amodeo

In our busy and technology-filled lives we can sometimes forget about the simple pleasures of reading a book. The importance of reading is often emphasized at the elementary level, but the benefits of reading are profound at the middle school level as well. You can read about the life-long physical and emotional benefits of reading here: Benefits of Reading Books: How It Can Positively Affect Your Life. Please talk to your student about what they are reading in school and consider setting aside some time to sit down together with a good book.

School Nutrition

Though school meals are no longer subsidized for every student, free and reduced-priced meals are available to those who qualify. The application can be found HERE.

To add funds to your child’s school lunch account, you can use our online system at MySchoolBucks or you can send a check directly to the TCSD Food Service Department. Students may always pay cash if they choose to as well.

5th Grade Daily Planner (Please bookmark for your use)

Please help your 5th grader remember to charge their Chromebook and to bring a water bottle.

ELA: This week students continued to commit to their newest free read book! We explored options of how to be successful each week with their reading goals by using post-its, a calendar or even their daily planner with specific daily deadlines. We also took time to examine the Reading Response Rubric that will be used to evaluate their weekly assignments. The overarching goal is to strive for a commitment to read outside of ELA class. This can be encouraged at home by doing any of the following:

  1. Designate a 15-30 time period each night for reading.
  2. Ask questions about their newest free read book.
  3. Read with them, to them or listen along as they read aloud.

Thank you for your continuous support 🙂

Math: students worked hard to complete their winter iReady diagnostic. We also began our new unit on Addition and Subtraction of Fractions by learning how to make equivalent fractions. Here is a link to the parent tip sheet that shares some of the concepts and vocabulary your student will be encountering during this unit: Parent Tip Sheet

Social Studies: This week we had the opportunity to take a Virtual Reality tour of a variety of Aztec ruins and historic sites. This was made possible and supported by a BOCES specialist. We also looked at the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Next week we will be starting the culminating project for our Aztec unit.

A Friendly Reminder: Health two-day lesson begins in PE classes on Tues and Wed, Jan 17 & 18.

Please remind students to bring a reusable water bottle to fill up at school. Students need pencils! Please send your student in with a few pencils!

Social Studies: Students began gathering information for their Athens and Sparta debate! They received their topic and city-state last week. Students will be researching both sides to get ready for a debate at the end of the month.

Math: Students worked hard to complete the iReady diagnostic. They also received a review sheet that is due on Wednesday 1/18 for a ratio quiz.

Science: Students investigated how fossils are formed. Ask them to tell you the steps needed for a fossil to form. Students also completed an activity to see about Earth’s history. We wrapped all around the building to build a timeline of Earth. Students looked at Era’s and periods to determine how scientists break Earth history up.

ELA: Students completed their rough drafts of their narrative. Next week we will be editing and revising. Students should complete their free read book by 1/20-please check-in to see how far they are in the book.

Health begins Q3 → Students will need a one-subject or composition notebook for this class.

Music: Mrs. Robertson & Mrs. Posegate’s classes finished up our African Drumming unit this week. We learned about African geography, culture and drumming. Here is a video of our performance!

Social Studies: Students this week are diving into the causes of the American Revolution. We are considering the various violent and nonviolent ways of protest by the Sons and Daughters of Liberty, recognizing bias in the Boston Massacre, and creating our own protest posters while indulging in some liberty tea. Next week, we will discuss short term events that led to war and begin writing essays on the Causes of the American Revolution.

ELA 7: This past week, we continued our reading adventures. We began each class reading, and then we researched the benefits of reading. We created a project this week to encourage others to read. We will be sharing our posters and videos with the middle school. Ask your 7th grader about the benefits of reading and encourage them to meet their reading goal for the week. Every student should be reading outside of class to meet their independent reading goal. This coming week, we will continue to read and to work on reading iReady.

Music: Please make sure to bring a CHARGED Chromebook to class. We are making our own music in BandLab! This week, we will be completing the assignment ‘BandLab Basics’ during class time. If students are absent, or don’t finish it during class, they will need to finish up on their own.

7/8 Band: We have been working very hard on how to read rhythms and label them. Why label rhythm? Because it shows we know how rhythm is distributed throughout a measure of music, and if we know that, we can play it better! Please encourage your student to practice rhythms in Noteflight (on Google Classroom) with a metronome. New band music will be passed out this week!

8th Grade

On January 25th, our 8th Grade Students will be taking a field trip to TST BOCES to learn more about the Career and Technical Education programs available to them in high school! There will be a 20-minute presentation for each CTE program, and each student will get to attend 3 presentations. For more information about TST BOCES Career and Tech programs, please click here.

Students will report to school as usual. We will transport them to TST BOCES around 8:30 and return around 11AM. Please call student services with any questions or concerns.

Social Studies: We’ve started the Age of Big Business & Labor, otherwise known as the Gilded Age. Ms. Lord, whom students will have for Health quarter 4, and I teamed up to create a station activity featuring living, work and health conditions of past and present. Students analyzed a variety of primary & secondary sources, then completed a venn diagram to determine how conditions were similar and different.
