Office Updates

From Mrs. Lomax

We are thrilled that so many of our students regularly attend athletic events on campus. Caregivers, please remember that students under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Consider joining your student(s) and cheering on the Blue Raiders! The schedule of all athletic events can be found HERE.

Second marking period report cards will go home with students on Friday, 2/9. In addition to the report card, you will receive your student’s results from our winter iReady testing in reading and math. These reports show your student’s achievement levels compared to other students nation-wide as well as their growth from when the tests were administered this fall. These results are used to measure the effectiveness of our instructional program and also to assign additional academic supports to students. Contact the Student Services office (607-387-7551 Ext. 1449) with any questions you have regarding these reports.

5th Grade Daily Planner (Please bookmark for your use). Please check your students’ take home folders and planners with them daily. Calling ALL PENCILS!!! Please remind students to bring spare pencils from home with them to school (either daily) or to store in their lockers! We are giving them the same messages here at school. THANK YOU!!!

ELA: This week students made a plan and set weekly goals to finish their NEWEST free read book! Students chose a book at our Book Tasting last Thursday. This book will need to be read by March 1. Students filled out their bookmarks and committed to weekly reading goals. Along with those goals they will need to complete one activity per week (due each Friday) to demonstrate their knowledge of the book. Ask your 5th grader what their new free read book is and how they are doing for their weekly goal!

Math: Students spent this week adding and subtracting mixed numbers which is the end of 3rd unit. Next week we will be having our end of unit assessment on Wednesday, 2/7. Students will be given a review packet on Monday to help them prepare.

Social Studies: This week we visited the Johnson Museum of Art to look at Mesoamerican art and created our own artwork. We also competed in “Jeopardy of the Aztec” using the questions and answers the 5th graders created. We will begin our study of the Inca next week.

Science: As we close in on the end of our mixtures and solutions unit, we have gotten into the concepts of “concentration” and “density” in solutions. Next we turn to learning the difference between physical change and chemical change. Students have completed several “team challenge”labs to demonstrate their science and engineering practices. After February break, we will return for a review and a final challenge, before moving into our biology.

Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule Our 5th grade “Twinkle Celebration” is this Tuesday, 2/6 at 7 pm in the middle school gym. Students should arrive at 6:45 to get ready. They can wear something “kind of nice” - whatever that means for them.

Social Studies: This week we started a project to show our knowledge of Ancient Egypt. Students are creating projects on mummification, pyramids, journals, or maps. We are also very excited for a Johnson Art Museum visit next Tuesday.

Math: Students began exploring ratios and finding equivalent ratios. Try to help your student find ratios in everyday life-grocery store, baking and reading.

Science: We spent the week exploring what causes earthquakes. We also looked at what makes plate tectonics move. On Thursday we studied our trout to see what they eat and how much they eat. The trout are getting bigger.

ELA: This week we continued reading New Kid as well as writing summaries. Students are enjoying their free read books! It is fun to see then get hooked into a series. Remember they should be meeting their calendar goals and working on their projects outside of school.

Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule It’s NYSSMA sign-up time! Sixth graders who are interested in participating in the NYSSMA solo fest need to fill out THIS google form permission slip with their grown-ups. More information is included with the form. Please complete by 2/9.

Science: This week, students did a presentation on genetic disorders and learned to track these using a pedigree chart. There will be a genetics/heredity quiz on Feb 7th. Students have a review sheet (also posted on Google Classroom) for the quiz. On Friday, we reflected on the second marking period using the Mood Meter.

ELA 7: This past week we worked on reading articles and planning essays. This coming week, we will pick one and write an essay. Then we will launch into exploring text structures

Math 7 & Pre-Algebra: This week in Math 7 we had our Percents assessment, wrapping up the unit with percent error, simple interest and commission. Next week we’ll start a two week unit on probability. Pre-Algebra students delved into graphing linear equations this past week and also worked with equations with variables on both sides. We’ll spend our class time graphing, and also get the first week of the probability unit asynchronously. Expect your student to have assignments nightly - all work is in Google Classroom and also listed in the weekly planner.
