Office Updates

From Mrs. Lomax

As you may already know, over the last week we have seen a high rate of illness among students at all three Trumansburg CSD buildings. While we encourage students to attend school as much as possible, it's equally important that students are kept home when they are ill. A quick reminder: if your child has had a fever, they must be fever free without medication for at least 24 hours before return. They also must be free of diarrhea and vomiting for at least 24 hours before returning to school. If your student is sick with any of the following symptoms, we strongly recommend testing for COVID-19 with an at-home test and staying home until symptoms improve.

• Cough

• Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

• Fatigue

• Muscle or body aches

• Headache

• New loss of taste or smell

• Sore throat

• Congestion or runny nose

• Nausea or vomiting

• Diarrhea

State regulation specifies that we receive a written excuse for each absence (preferably on the day the student returns to school). Please email: MSAttendance@tburg.k12.ny.us to notify the school regarding any absences and their reasons.

Thank you for your attention to these guidelines.

5th Grade

5th Grade Daily Planner (Please bookmark for your use). Please check your students’ take home folders and planners with them daily. Calling ALL PENCILS!!! Please remind students to bring spare pencils from home with them to school (either daily) or to store in their lockers! We are giving them the same messages here at school. THANK YOU!!!

ELA: This week students began to read Promises to Keep; How Jackie Robinson Changed America in class. We reviewed features of biographical texts and gained background knowledge about life in America before Jackie Robinson was born. Most of our work with this text will take place in class, but if you would like to borrow a copy for your own reference, don’t be afraid to reach out. Students should also be busy enjoying reading their free read book at home. From our planning class, students should be working through their second week of reading by Wednesday or Thursday of this week in order to complete their Week #2 activity that is due Friday.

Math: students took their module 3 assessment which focused on addition and subtracting of fractions and mixed numbers. These tests will be handed back to them on Monday, 2/12. Looking towards next week students will have one practice assignment due on Friday and will be spending some time focusing on line plots.

Social Studies: This week we started to research the Inca civilization. We learned about their Geography, Religion, and Achievements.

Science: We are supersaturating solutions! Woot! If your student comes home wanting to make rock candy in your kitchen, yeah, that’s my fault. Recipes are readily available online. This optional kitchen-chemistry lab gets very hot and sticky, so you’ll definitely want to supervise.

***Students are in need of pencils-please make sure your student has pencils for school. Check their backpacks!!

Social Studies: Students wrapped up their Ancient Egypt projects. Next week we will look at why we celebrate Black History month. We will also be looking at Lunar New Year.

Math: In math we will be continuing with ratios and adding unit rate. We will also start putting ratio tables into graphs.

Science: In science we have been investigating the interaction of tectonic plates and the effects that they can have on the land. We are working on figuring out what is causing mountains to move location and change elevation each year. In addition to the plates moving we have also investigated the effect that earthquakes and volcanoes can have on the land.

ELA: In ELA students have been reading New Kid and our Malala text to find a common theme and write an essay. Students have a free read book project due Friday (if they are doing the project). Students will be creating a microaggression scripts next week.

Health 6: We have had a wonderful start to Health class! Students learned about the value of having a growth mindset and goal-setting to maintaining or improving one’s health. Next week begins an introduction to personal health where students consider how to find balance in a digital world, how to access quality health information online, as well as discuss practices for keeping a body healthy.

Please remind students to bring pencils, their Chromebook charger, and a water bottle to school.

Science: This week we compared modern penguins to the 36 million year old fossilized remains of a penguin named Pedro. This is a fun way to learn about common ancestry and how species have changed over time. The Genetics assessment scores are on SchoolTool.

ELA 7: This past week we journeyed into the depths of how to transform our plans into essays. Then we revisited our writing to “rainbow” (color code) the parts to make sure that we included all essential parts. Our final visit to our essays was to self-reflect on our essays. We will also read an informational article “19th Century: Black People And Photography As A Social Change Tool,” which will be a springboard this coming week as we travel back to the 1950s and the short story “Thank you, Ma’am” by Langston Hughes.

Social Studies: This week we continued our study of the Washington Administration. We started by examining the Whiskey Rebellion, and moved through Washington’s Farewell Address, and the peaceful transfer of power to the second president, John Adams.

Math 7 & Pre-Algebra: This week in Math 7 we started our Probability unit. We’ve been learning about sample spaces and favorable outcomes. Next week we’ll wrap up our unit and will have several short assessments as we head into break. In Pre-Algebra we are hard at work learning about linear equations and how to solve systems of linear equations by graphing. We’re also starting to learn about probability asynchronously using Khan Academy. Next week we’ll wrap up systems, and spend a few days doing more probability work in class, while our linear equations work turns async. Both Math 7 and Pre-Algebra students are fiercely challenging each other in the new IXL leaderboards. This time they run for 5 weeks and each class is competing against each other. I’m really impressed with how hard the kids are working. Competition is always a fun boost. Only grade skills count for Math 7 and grade 7 and 8 skills count for Pre-Algebra. A favorite moment of my week was in my Friday study hall. A few kids asked if they could do more work with what we were doing in class. Soon I was watching them solve problems with variables on both sides saying, “math is fun!” Of course, toward the end it morphed into a drawing fest, but a lot of math was done before that shift happened.

Chorus: MP2 Lesson Schedule / MP2 Lesson Groups

Music: We are getting more and more familiar with playing chords on ukulele and switching from 1 chord to another quickly and accurately. We are practicing different play-alongs during class, and will have an assessment soon with each student playing a song of their choice using the chords we have been working on.

7/8 Band: Students are working towards 2 playing assessments. Both will happen during lessons:

  1. Level 1 playing assessment
  2. Band Music playing assessment

See Google Classroom, or ask your student for details!

Parents: Reminder--Students should be emailing their teachers when absent -- that way they can know what was covered in class. Also please follow the below steps to check assignments in your child’s Google Classrooms.

Science 8: Students have been learning about the acceleration of gravity here on earth and its effects on objects in free fall.

Regents Earth Science: Students have been learning how to correlate rock outcrops from different areas and put events in order. Students also began learning about fossils, how they form, and what they can tell us about our past.

Kotler’s ELA 8: This week students are wrapping up short stories and will transition into black history (mini-biographies starting next week). Before changing topics, students will: submit a work sample to ePortfolio, cleanout classroom folders, and work on independent reading projects. Thursday & Friday, students will learn about New York State’s secret history of the Underground Railroad and read Langston Hughes’ poem, “I, Too”.

Social Studies: We kicked off a new unit -- the 1920s. Our focus this week was on the social, economic, and political tensions following WWI. We will again practice making a claim, backing it with evidence, and putting it all together in our reasoning.
