Office Updates

From Mr. Megivern

This month our school will hold a Fire Safety Day on the 18th. The Trumansburg Fire Department will stop by with a short lesson on kitchen fire prevention and a demonstration on putting out grease fires, to be held in our back parking lot. Students will even get a chance to use dry chemical fire extinguishers! Our thanks to T-burg Fire for making time to share this important info with our kids! You can find a link to the U.S. Fire Administration’s holiday fire safety page HERE, and the Trumansburg Fire Department HERE.

School Nutrition

We are pleased to announce that all school meals are now free for Trumansburg CSD students. Our district has been granted the mid-year community eligibility provision (CEP), a federal and state grant subsidy that covers the expense of student meals. We are more than ecstatic to provide free nutritious meals to our student population, alleviating the financial burden on our families. Additional items beyond the daily meal will still be available for separate purchase should students so desire. Many thanks to our school lunch personnel who work tirelessly to provide our students with nutritious and appetizing meals. Their commitment is essential to the education and overall health of our student body. Thank you for the positive impact you make every day. We look forward to seeing all students in the lunch line!

5th Grade

5th Grade Daily Planner (Please bookmark for your use). Please check your students’ take home folders and planners with them daily.

ELA: This week students are approaching the final chapters in Front Desk. We also are working on collaboration in our motel groups in order to prepare for our final novel project. Students should be working on passing their 4th iReady reading lesson by Friday of this week.

Math: Students completed their mid-module assessment. The assessment covered multi digit multiplication, expressions, and metric and customary conversions. Students should expect this back at the beginning of the week. Looking ahead, we will be diving into dividing whole numbers by multiples of ten and hundred and estimating quotients in larger division problems. Students will have an iReady lesson due at the end of the week (12/8).

Social Studies: This week we took part in a “Mayan Mystery Puzzle Adventure” and started our Final Maya Complex Society project. We also had Miss Valletta come in and work with us on coping skills.

Science: Want to see some science? Do you have a raw egg and some white vinegar? After Tuesday, ask your kiddo. It’s time for chemistry!

Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule 5th graders have been learning Jingle Bells this week! Tis the Season! :) We are also learning to reading musical notation in our Making Music Matter method book. I encourage the students to “Say it, Play it” as a great way to practice reading the music.

Chorus: 5-12 Winter Chorus Concert is 12/12 @ 7:00 PM in the HS Auditorium

THRIVE: After-school tutoring is in progress. Fill out this form to sign-up.

***Students are in need of pencils-please make sure your student has pencils for school. Check their backpacks!!

Social Studies: Social studies was busy this week as students continued to learn about Paleolithic and Neolithic times. Students were able to perform a play about the discovery of fire. It was so fun to watch their acting skills.

Math: We spent the week writing algebraic expressions. We also applied those skills to completing a chart and finding an expression that fits a situation. Students have been working in random groupings on white boards throughout the room. The discussions and thinking has been wonderful to see.

Science: This week in science we spent time exploring weather maps of a storm system to look for patterns in air pressure, temperature, and humidity. Students also learned about air masses and fronts and are trying their hands at weather forecasting based on current conditions. Our trout are developing quickly with most sitting upright and a few trying out their newly developed swim bladders.

ELA: We have new free read books! Students have a calendar they are following and an assignment a week. Please check in to see where your student is. We began comparing Lightning Thief and “A Hero’s Journey” to see how Percy is following a hero’s journey. We will begin writing an essay next week to show the similarities.

Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule 6 - 12 Winter Band Concert is 12/14 @ 7 pm in the HS Auditorium. In preparation for our concert please check in with your student to make sure they have several good reeds, valve oil and that their instrument is working properly. We had a great rehearsal today working on expressive elements like dynamics (different volumes). Keep up the great work!

Chorus: 6th Grade starts chorus lessons in Marking Period 2. MP2 Lesson Schedule / MP2 Lesson Groups

5-12 Winter Chorus Concert is 12/12 @ 7:00 PM in the HS Auditorium

THRIVE: After-school tutoring is in progress. Fill out this form to sign-up.

7th Grade

7th Grade Digital Planner (Please bookmark this link.)

Please remind students to bring pencils, their Chromebook charger, and a water bottle to school.

Science: This week we learned about germination and how different environmental conditions can affect germination of food crops. We used a variety of seeds including barley, oats, corn, and wheat. On Wednesday Mr. Buck, the Farm To School Coordinator, came in to talk about plants and help make a tasty treat.

Rattenborg’s Small Class ELA 7: Please see the 7th Grade Digital Planner for live updates on what we are doing in class and what HW is assigned.

Math 7 & Pre-Algebra: This week we kicked off with the Marshmallow Challenge. Check out this video of our day. The kids had a lot of fun, and most importantly they demonstrated that they really know how to cooperate well. Students selected their own landing seats to kick off each class in, and now that we are very comfortable in our random groups, this week we have been getting into them and then spending most/all of the rest of the period with that group. I’m very excited to see the growth in the students. All are willing to work with every person in the room - a key life skill needed for most any job they will hold in the future. In the world of curriculum, we entered into our Expressions and Equations unit, learning how to combine like terms, work with complex distributive property problems, and to factor expressions. Next week we’ll move into solving 2 step equations. Pre-Algebra had an asynchronous assignment learning about scatter plots. Next week they will work more with those, also in Khan Academy. If you haven’t yet set up a charging station at home, please do. When we use our Chrome books it is for a short bit of time, and it is essential that they be charged. Sometimes we are on them for just 5-10 minutes, and fumbling for chargers makes the class feel chaotic, often rendering the short task not very relevant for kids who are not prepared with a charged Chrome book.

Social Studies: This week we investigated the causes of the American Revolutionary War including taxes, boycotts, the Boston Massacre, and the Boston Tea Party. Next week we will be starting with the “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” and moving up to the Washington’s winter camp at Valley Forge

Chorus: MP2 Lesson Schedule / MP2 Lesson Groups 5-12 Winter Chorus Concert is 12/12 @ 7:00 PM in the HS Auditorium

Music: We continue to work on writing short responses to songs that we like. We are working on writing with more detail and using music specific vocabulary. We wrapped up the Favorite Song Bracket this week. The winner is…. ‘Feeling Good’ by Nina Simone! Next up- we start our final project for the unit soon.

7/8 Band: Please ask your band student to play their concert music for you! They can play along with recordings of the music posted on Google Classroom. 5-12 Bands Winter Concert is 12/14 @7pm in the HS Auditorium

Kotler’s ELA 8: This week, students will read chapters 10-16 of The Giver, while continuing to analyze characterization (flat/round, static/dynamic). Tuesday, we’ll continue to apply characterization using our Lego minifigure characters (adding setting & conflict to put our characters into a story). Wednesday is word study with therm(o)- and cry(o)-. Thursday and Friday we’ll dive back into The Giver and identify character types. Next week, we will examine symbols and themes in The Giver.

Social Studies: This week we kicked off a new unit on Immigration & Urbanization. Ask your student to tell you about the Urbanization game!

Next week, students will explore various TedTalks on nutrition and physical activity and prepare informational posters on what they learn to share with the school community. Other lessons will include goal-setting, examining guidelines for teens regarding physical activity, eating healthy when having fast food, & how to resist pressures to eat unhealthy.
