Office Updates

From Ms. Lomax

Congratulations to Mrs. Posegate, Mrs. Robertson, Mr. Mullarney, and all of the middle school chorus and band students who played in our winter concerts last week. It was wonderful to see our students’ musical abilities grow from 5th grade all the way up to 12th grade.

On behalf of the middle school community, I wish all of our families a happy holiday season and restful break. See you in 2024!

From Mr. Megivern

This Monday, Dec. 18, is Fire Safety Day at the middle school. The Trumansburg Fire Department will be on campus delivering a lesson and demonstration on putting out grease fires. Thank you in advance to T-burg Fire!

On Wednesday, Dec. 20 we’ll have another You Rule card random drawing, where students who earned a You Rule card this past month will have a chance at a Byrne Dairy gift card, courtesy of the T-burg PTO. Two per grade level will win!

School Nutrition

We are pleased to announce that all school meals are now free for Trumansburg CSD students. Our district has been granted the mid-year community eligibility provision (CEP), a federal and state grant subsidy that covers the expense of student meals. We are more than ecstatic to provide free nutritious meals to our student population, alleviating the financial burden on our families. Additional items beyond the daily meal will still be available for separate purchase should students so desire. Many thanks to our school lunch personnel who work tirelessly to provide our students with nutritious and appetizing meals. Their commitment is essential to the education and overall health of our student body. Thank you for the positive impact you make every day. We look forward to seeing all students in the lunch line!

5th Grade

5th Grade Daily Planner (Please bookmark for your use). Please check your students’ take home folders and planners with them daily.

ELA: This week students worked on writing their Motel Essays for our final project. We learned about an effective strategy to write an effective introduction paragraph called HIT and worked on effective topic & closing sentences. Projects will wrap up next week!

Science: Our chemistry unit opens with a lot of vocabulary: mixture, solution, dissolve, solvent, solute, physical property, screen, filter. Asking your kiddo about these terms and using them in conversation is a great way to help them learn and remember them.

Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule Wednesday lessons will not meet this week due to holiday activities. Please keep practicing! Most 5th graders started to learn “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” this week in preparation for our Twinkle Celebration in February.

THRIVE: After-school tutoring is in progress. Fill out this form to sign-up.

***Students are in need of pencils-please make sure your student has pencils for school. Check their backpacks!!

Social Studies: Wow! Students have been busy in social studies. Students finalized their paragraph about the pros and cons of the agricultural revolution. Students began exploring Mesopotamia. We wrote messages in clay to practice Cuneiform. We will dig deeper into Mesopotamia next week.

Math: Last Friday we took a quiz on solving equations and writing expressions. Our work with expressions and equations is starting to wrap up. We will continue this week to look at equations and tables, and we will also incorporate some graphing into the mix. When we come back from break, we’ll look at inequalities to finish up the unit. Also, it seems we are handing out more and more pencils everyday. Please check with your student to be sure they have what they need.

Science: This week we wrapped up our weather & climate unit. Students began the new state science investigation on weather & climate that is required of students before they take the 8th grade science exam. They will finish that up before we head off on break next week. The trout are getting bigger and actually “look like fish”. We will spend some when we get back making closer observations of our trout and learning about how they adapt and survive in their natural habitats. We will also start our next unit by looking at what is happening in the Himalayas. Have a well deserved break!

ELA: We have been working very hard in ELA class. Students have been writing their theme essays. They will revise and edit their essay next week to turn in by Tuesday. Students continue to read their Hero’s Journey book and will complete their book and finish their final assignment by Wednesday. Many students have been reading other Hero’s Journey books or are reading the next book in the series. For the month of December students have also been practicing gratitude by writing in a journal on a daily basis-three things they are grateful for.

Band: Congrats on a fabulous Winter Concert! I’m so proud of you! No 6th grade lessons this week. There will be an option to play carols on Wednesday morning and we WILL have band rehearsal.

Chorus: Chorus lessons: MP2 Lesson Schedule / MP2 Lesson Groups

THRIVE: After-school tutoring is in progress. Fill out this form to sign-up.

Science: This week we learned about photosynthesis! Students set up experiments with different variables related to photosynthesis and collected data on barley plant growth. On Thursday we took a break from plants and a guest speaker from Cornell came to discuss comparative anatomy. Students got to see dissected lamprey, sharks and pigeons.

Rattenborg’s Small Class ELA 7: Please see the 7th Grade Digital Planner for live updates on what we are doing in class and what HW is assigned.

Math 7 & Pre-Algebra: This week we wrapped up our work with combining like terms with an all day progressive Monopoly game - see the video . Each period worked for different things; period 1 solved problems for property and money, 3rd worked to swap for sets and for money, and period 5 and 7 also completed problems for purchasing houses and hotels. Period 9 worked to roll and they had to pay out the money as they landed on those houses and hotels. Later in the week Math 7 continued work on 2-step equations and writing equations for real life scenarios while Pre-Algebra moved to solve multi-step equations and and equations with variables on both sides. Students are self-assessing their success skills and will be individually conferencing with me next week as we do some station work to end 2023

Chorus: MP2 Lesson Schedule / MP2 Lesson Groups 5-12 Winter Chorus Concert is 12/12 @ 7:00 PM in the HS Auditorium

Algebra: Students worked on solving linear systems. Methods included graphing, substitution, and elimination. Students will take a test on monday and spend the rest of the week starting their exploration of inequalities and systems of inequalities.

Kotler’s ELA 8: Today, as a class, we finished reading The Giver and discussed various interpretations of the ending. Tomorrow we will analyze the book’s theme. Wednesday is word study (suffix - “ology”). Thursday, students will write an essay response to analyze and support how Jonas (The Giver’s protagonist) changes throughout the story (and is therefore a dynamic character). Friday, students have earned a “free”, fun day! (slay-day!).

Social Studies: To wrap up our unit on immigration, we had Ithaca Welcomes Refugees here to talk about the services they provide refugees from. Our area is assisting refugees from Ukraine, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Cuba, among others. We also started a new unit on the Progressive Era and our focus this week was on women’s suffrage.
