Office Updates

From Ms. Lomax

Thank you to all of our middle school families who contributed to our Student Council’s food drive last week. It was wonderful to see our students recognizing the value of giving back to our community.

We are looking forward to our winter concerts this week. The choruses perform on Tuesday at 7pm and the bands take the stage on Thursday at the same time. See you at the High School Auditorium!

School Nutrition

We are pleased to announce that all school meals are now free for Trumansburg CSD students. Our district has been granted the mid-year community eligibility provision (CEP), a federal and state grant subsidy that covers the expense of student meals. We are more than ecstatic to provide free nutritious meals to our student population, alleviating the financial burden on our families. Additional items beyond the daily meal will still be available for separate purchase should students so desire. Many thanks to our school lunch personnel who work tirelessly to provide our students with nutritious and appetizing meals. Their commitment is essential to the education and overall health of our student body. Thank you for the positive impact you make every day. We look forward to seeing all students in the lunch line!

5th Grade Daily Planner (Please bookmark for your use). Please check your students’ take home folders and planners with them daily.

Math: Students were handed back their mid module assessments this week. We met with students to discuss their score and rubric for the test. We have also begun multi digit whole number division. Students divided two and three digit dividends by two digit divisors with remainders. Next week we will remove the remainders and have decimal quotients.

Social Studies: This week we worked on our final Mayan project. Our objective was to create a presentation that used our research to prove the Mayan were a complex society. Next week we will begin our study of the Aztec civilization.

Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule We are playing Jingle Bells and also getting further in the Making Matter Music book. Thet are really getting more fluent with reading the musical notation. Yay!

SSocial Studies: Students spent last week gathering evidence about the agricultural revolution. We ended the week with students writing a rough draft paragraph about the pros and cons of the agricultural revolution. We also celebrated Hanukkah on Friday with Dreidel games and chocolate.

Math: Math students began solving one step equations. We will be working next week on multiplication and division of one step equations.

Science: We looked at how oceans impact precipitation. Why do we have more precipitation on the East Coast? What is the temperature of the Atlantic vs. Pacific Ocean?

ELA: We continue to read our Hero’s Journey free read book. Students should be about half way done with their book. We also began writing our theme essay for Lightning Thief.

Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule 6 - 12 Winter Band Concert is 12/14 @ 7 pm in the HS Auditorium. Please report to the HS at 6:40 and meet on stage. Dress nicely.

7th Grade

7th Grade Digital Planner (Please bookmark this link.)

Please remind students to bring pencils, their Chromebook charger, and a water bottle to school.

Science: This week we learned about plant reproduction and pollination. Looking at the beauty of different types of flowers is always a bright spot in the day. Next week on Friday the 15th there will be an assessment on plants and photosynthesis. Students have a weekly practice on photosynthesis from a couple of weeks ago to study from and we will be reviewing in class. On Tuesday Ms. Valletta from the counseling office came and talked about coping strategies.

ELA 7: We have studied personal narratives, and now we’re writing our personal narratives in class. This week we need to write the draft of our personal narrative, self-revise and edit, partner revise, and complete our final draft. If we miss a class, then we’ll need to work on it outside of class as well. The final copy is due Friday, December 15th.

Rattenborg’s Small Class ELA 7: Please see the 7th Grade Digital Planner for live updates on what we are doing in class and what HW is assigned.

Math 7 & Pre-Algebra: Watch this short video (includes period 7 & 9) from our prior week where we practiced simplifying expressions using a math version of Capture the Flag. Things got pretty competitive! Currently we are solving 2 step equations. We’ve used hanger models and tape diagrams to help our brains model the equation and visualize strategies to solve them. Pre-Algebra is also looking at some statistics topics, and we’ll dive a little deeper into that next week. Both classes worked through partner practice with these on Friday. Check out our photos from period 3 and period 9. Please encourage your kids to come with Chrome books charged and to stay up on the teacher suggested topics in IXL. I’m really noticing an increased math confidence with the kids who are making time for that weekly work. It reinforces what we are doing in class in a way that gives instant feedback.

Chorus: MP2 Lesson Schedule / MP2 Lesson Groups 5-12 Winter Chorus Concert is 12/12 @ 7:00 PM in the HS Auditorium

Music: We have continued practice with writing short responses to music that we like. Lots of peer feedback and revisions! This week, we will start the unit final project that involves creating an annotated playlist of songs that represent us.

7/8 Band: The 7th & 8th grade band had the unique opportunity to work with a guest composer this week! We were part of a commission consortium that commissioned Kevin Krumenauer, a Manhattan based composer, to write a piece specifically for 7th & 8th grade band. Mr. Krumenauer came to Trumansburg MS on 12/6 to work with the 7th & 8th grade band on the piece that he wrote for them. We will be playing this piece, The Water is Wide, at our upcoming concert on 12/14.

Algebra: This week we began looking at linear systems. Students took a graphical approach to solving them. We also tried to determine when a system might have no solution or infinite solutions prior to graphing. Next week we will look at solving linear systems algebraically using substitution and elimination methods.

Math 8: Students took their final test on transformations. We spent a good amount of time talking about dilations and the difference between similar and congruent. Next week we start our unit on linear equations and students will be coving the topics of slope and rate of change.

Kotler’s ELA 8: This week, students will want to focus on finishing Lois Lowry’s The Giver. Tuesday, we will take a look at various symbols in the book and, Thursday, we will evaluate character types, taking a look at which characters have changed since the exposition (dynamic) and who hasn’t (static). Friday, students will read an article about conformity, for text-to-world connections.
