Office Updates

Welcome to May!!

Math state exams are being administered to all middle school grade levels this Wednesday and Thursday. These tests are extremely valuable to our school community as they provide us with useful information on the efficacy of our curriculum and instruction, and on our students’ ability to be successful in their coursework moving forward. Our students are well-prepared for these tests which take, on average, 80 minutes each day. Please encourage your student(s) to come prepared with a fully-charged Chromebook, to get lots of rest the nights before the exams, and to keep cool – this is an opportunity to show what you know!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at: jamodeo@tburg.k12.ny.us

From Ms. Amodeo

We are looking for parent volunteers to help us on June 2nd. If you are interested, please contact Gail Brisson at gbrisson@tburg.k12.ny.us.

ELA: This week in ELA students were introduced to the WSKG PBS Student Writing Challenge. Details about this contest were given and then students thoroughly enjoyed some free writing time each day to compose in class. Students chose their own topics and were given time to craft a piece/explore options to enter into this contest. We also enjoyed a walk to the Ulysses Philomathic Library for the Spring Book Sale. Students were given a free book voucher and had an opportunity to bring a book home to keep.

Band 5: Parent Band participants should be working on Lesson 2 soon, if they haven’t already. I’ll have Lesson 3 guides ready to hand out this coming week. If you have any questions or need assistance please reach out.

Please remind students to bring a reusable water bottle to fill up at school. Students need pencils! Please send your student in with a few pencils! Healthy snacks are a great idea to send in with your student, they are growing at a rapid rate.

Social Studies: Students in social studies started learning about Ancient Rome. We looked at geography and achievements. Students were able to compare how we still use some of the Roman achievements today. Ask your students how we are influenced by Ancient Rome. We will have a visit from Johnson Art Museum on Monday!

Math:. We have moved into the coordinate plane! Students spent the week plotting points in all four quadrants. Students are also looking at the distance between two points.

Science: We were fortunate to have PhD students from Cornell’s engineering program visit us to talk about renewable energy. Students made mini water turbines and tested them out. One of the students is a Trumansburg graduate. Students have also spent the week recording weather and looking at patterns.

ELA: What great discussions we have been having in ELA about New Kid and microaggressions. Students also began writing letters to Congress about a water issue they chose to research. Students should be one fourth of the way through their free read book! This book is being read outside of class. Students have picked some great books to start.

Band: NYSSMA participants are also required to learn 3 scales by memory. You can support your NYSSMA student by quizzing them on these scales occasionally.

Science: Many students successfully completed their Earthworm Dissection last week! This week we will shift our focus to plants and investigate wheat seeds and dissect flowers.

ELA 7: We are reading the book All the Broken Pieces. Please remind your 7th grader to read Monday-Thursday and to complete the short writing assignment that goes with the reading. Thank you for your support in reminding our students to complete their work.

Math: We have been reviewing for our State Test during the week of April 24th! I explained why all students should take the test, even though it is not a grade. All students will have to take Math Regents in high hchool, and those are summative, single day exams that occur in a specific amount of time. So, the State Test provides low stakes, low risk practice for the high stakes tests they will need to graduate! So, everyone wins when we take the State Test! Our school is taking them online during May 3rd and May 4th!

Music: This week, students have started learning guitar! We have learned the parts of the guitar, how to handle and hold it, string names, and how to use our fingers on the frets. Next week, we will be reviewing these skills and having a quiz on the parts of the guitar. We will then begin to learn how to read and play chords!

7/8 Band: The practice rooms have been busy on the 3rd floor! Keep encouraging your students to utilize these spaces to get some practice done during the school day. If your student is participating in NYSSMA, you can help them practice by quizzing them on their scales! Depending on the level of their solo, students either need to be learning 3 or 7 scales (and the judge will choose 3) to play from memory. NYSSMA is May 19th & 20th. Only 3 lessons left!!!!

7/8 Lesson Schedule 5/1- 5/5

8th Grade

ELA 8: Students will finish reading The King of Mulberry Street by Donna Jo Napoli this week, completing the guided reading pink packet for Friday. Thursday, students will receive an interview project. Students are asked to find a trusted adult they’d like to learn more about in order to interview and write a short biography on their interview subject. On Friday, if we’re able to finish TKoMS Thursday, we will walk to the Ulysses Philomathic Library (Library Card signup) to each get a FREE book at the Friends of the Library Book Sale.

Social Studies: We wrap up our unit on the Great Depression with an essay addressing the problems of the Great Depression and actions taken to solve the problems brought during this time. Students will use information from a variety of primary & secondary sources to respond to the question.

Health 8: Ask your 8th grader how using the SMART approach to goal-setting may help them set and achieve a goal! Students now know how to seek reliable and accurate health information online. In week one of our unit on nutrition and physical activity, students learned the benefits of 6 key nutrients, food types that offer these nutrients, and standard food portions as well as the importance of food variety in one’s diet. Week two of this unit unfolds next week. The second week of May, students will begin the unit on abstinence, puberty and personal health.
