Office Updates

From Mrs. Lomax

The year is flying by! Our third marking period closes on Friday, 4/19. Be sure to check in with your student(s) and their teachers about any work that needs to be completed. Report cards will be sent home next Friday.

Additionally, please see the attached letter from Mrs. Bell and Ms. Rapoza regarding State testing in the coming weeks. Don't hesitate to reach out to me or your student's teachers with any questions.

Please consider donating your eclipse glasses! The library and PTO are collecting used but undamaged eclipse glasses to mail to Eclipse Glasses USA, an organization that helps supply other countries with upcoming eclipse events. Simply drop your eclipse glasses off at the MS library, the main office, or the Ulysses Philomathic Library by April 20th, and the PTO mail them out for you!

Alternatively, you may mail them yourself to:

Thank you for recycling!

5th Grade Daily Planner (Please bookmark for your use). Please check your students’ take home folders and planners with them daily. Calling ALL PENCILS!!! Please remind students to bring spare pencils from home with them to school (either daily) or to store in their lockers! We are giving them the same messages here at school. THANK YOU!!!

ELA: This week students wrapped up our class text, Promises to Keep: How Jackie Robinson Changed America by learning about his role in the Civil Rights Movement and his legacy.

Math: This week the students wrote and evaluated numerical expressions with parenthesis and fractions. It was a challenging topic as we are beginning to put together all the amazing knowledge they have gathered over the course of our units on fractions. These skills were in preparation for our end of unit test on Friday 4/19. Students will have a study guide that will help prepare them for the test which will be handed out on Monday.

Science: We have made redworm habitats in the classroom. In our study of nutrient systems, we’ll be activating yeast, germinating grass seeds, and learning about the entire human digestive system, end to end. Get ready for some colorful dinner-table conversations.

Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule Penny Band has begun! Students and 5th grade teachers should be working on lesson 1! Please mark your calendars for our Spring Band & Chorus concert Thursday, May 16 at 7pm. Details will be shared as we get closer.

6th Grade

Health: In our final week of health, students will review skills and concepts taught and welcome time outdoors to engage with nature. Mr. Buck, our Farm-to-School Educator, will join class to co-lead lessons on nature-deficit and guerilla gardening where we emphasize the many benefits of nature and gardens on both personal and community health.

Band: Mrs. Posegate’s Lesson Schedule Please mark your calendars - NYSSMA solo festival is coming up 5/3 & 5/4. Our concert AND our trip to NYSSMA Major Ensemble festival is May 16th. Please continue to encourage practice at home. : )

7th Grade Digital Planner (Please bookmark this link.)

Please remind students to bring pencils, their Chromebook charger, and a water bottle to school.

Science: On Monday, 4/15, we will have a CER (Claim Evidence Reasoning) writing assessment on ecology. To prepare, we completed two CERs this week in class. In addition to CERs, we made food webs and energy pyramids. Students enjoyed looking at the relationships of different organisms.

ELA: This week we will embark on a journey to the Realm of the Nobles as we race to conquer as much land as possible. Our battle for land will be based on our ability to answer questions about the 6 scrolls (texts: articles, poetry, and stories) as decreed by the great nobles. These essential scrolls are found in the Kingdom of Google Classroom (“Test Prep”). {All students should read these carefully in order to fully participate in class. Also, everyone should read for a minimum of 20 minutes per day.}

Math 7 & Pre-Algebra: Both classes circled back to revisit probability and box plots this past week, and Pre-Algebra students also completed their work with linear functions and started to look at frequency tables. Pre-Algebra students will have 2 asynchronous video and problem set assignments this week to continue their work with frequency tables and both classes will spend time reviewing like terms and unit rates. Our IXL national challenge is ongoing through April 30. To be included, each student must hit 100 on at least 3 skills and then all the math problems they do in grade 3-8 content will count toward the total number of problems. The goal is to get more problems solved than other classes in the country. The cool thing about this is that if kids are open to watching the short instructional videos they can learn some new content themselves, and if they want to focus on practicing basic skills they can choose to select things that they know how to do already. Either way, it helps them add tools to their toolbox. As a grade we’ve solved 140,000 math problems this year in IXL and half of those have been done at home!

Music: We will continue learning how to use BandLab, and we will have our first assignment due this week. It is VERY important for students to have a charged chromebook for class every day over the next several weeks for this unit.

7/8 Band: It is crunch time for NYSSMA solo and ensemble festival! The festival dates are 5/3 & 5/4. The schedule will be coming soon. Please take a look at the Practice Countdown Calendar/Practice Tips to help your student prepare.

Here is a fun Practice Challenge that was offered to students this week. A little extra motivation never hurts!

May 15th- ALL 7th & 8th grade band students will be traveling to Owego to compete in NYSSMA Majors. This trip will take place during the school day. More details will be available soon! In the meantime, it is especially important that students be practicing their band music. We will be competing and receiving scores on Joy, The Wings of Mercury, and Spring March.

8th Grade

Parents: Reminder--Students should be emailing their teachers when absent -- that way they can know what was covered in class. Also please follow the below steps to check assignments in your child’s Google Classrooms.

Algebra: Students started work on a statistics unit. We discussed concepts such as central tendency and ways to visually represent data using boxplots, histograms and dotplots.

Math 8: Students spent the week reviewing the properties of exponents. There will be a quiz on monday next week and then we will shift into state test review until the exam.

Science: We began our unit on Electromagnetic Forces. The state science test will be on Tuesday morning, April 16.

Regents Earth Science: We are finishing up our unit on Meteorology. Students have learned how to predict weather and also have learned about severe weather and safety precautions to take in an event. Students have weekly regents review assignments from now until June. Please ask them about it. The first assignment is due Tuesday, 4/16.

Kotler’s ELA8: This week, students will begin reading Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Adaptation (reading the original prose diary is an option for additional credit, 4/4). Students are also preparing for the NYS ELA exam (04/23-04/24) by identifying relevant text details, in both reading passage and student writing samples.

Social Studies: This week we kicked off the Civic Readiness Capstone project. Students will be researching a current issue, then creating & presenting their project. This project will encourage students to be civic-minded citizens as they learn more about their world & how individuals use their voice & actions to improve their community. This project will earn students credit toward their Civic Readiness Seal upon graduation.
