Office Updates
From Ms. Amodeo
We have noticed that, at times, drop-off and pick-up has become hectic in the front parking lot. For the safety of all, please keep in mind the following guidelines:
We enjoyed seeing you at parent-teacher conferences this week and hope you and your family had a restful and rejuvenating Thanksgiving Break.

ELA: Last week in ELA we were busy! Students independently practiced gisting individual chapters from our novel to summarize a section of the text. Then, they wore their ‘teacher hats’ to design their own challenge questions for others in the class to answer. Finally, we ended the week with a fun, festive Reader’s Theater titled, “The Mystery of the Vanishing Turkey” to help practice our fluency skills! What a great week it was!
Band: Our concert is coming up FAST! The 5/6 Band and Chorus concert is Thursday December 8th at 7 pm in the High School auditorium. Please encourage your student to practice their concert music regularly! :) Band 5/6 Lesson Schedule Link

Social Studies: Students completed an amazing project on water scarcity. They created beautiful images that are hung up in the hallway.
Math: We explored the following questions: What makes an equivalent ratio? How do you know if ratios are equivalent? How can you model ratios?
Science: We have started to “dig” into the layers of the earth. Students began exploring Earth's layers. We began looking at how far humans have dug into Earth. If we have not journeyed that far how do we know what the center of Earth is like?
ELA: We are finishing Lightning Thief! Students will be finishing the book this week. We also started exploring what a theme is. What makes a theme? What themes are in Lightning Thief and Cronus myth?
Band 6: Our concert is coming up FAST! The 5/6 Band and Chorus concert is Thursday December 8th at 7 pm in the High School auditorium. Please encourage your student to practice their concert music regularly! :)

Math: What a week before break! Pre-Algebra has had to work at a much faster pace for us to catch up to where we need to be, but I think we’ve got there. Firstly, our long awaited second unit test will be coming up the week after break! Wow! Second, we’ve gotten a few quizzes in as well. Math 7 has been taking its time to practice adding positive and negative numbers. It’s going very well! They also had a quiz the week on the 18th about it. Woo hoo!
Music: Students completed a graded assessment called ‘A Song You Like- Part 2’ this past week. This was in preparation for our final project of the unit which we will start working on after Thanksgiving! Students have been learning about and practicing using musical vocabulary to talk about what they hear when they listen to a song, and why they like it. AND… drum roll please…. The winner of the Russell I. Doig MS Favorite Song Bracket is… ‘Renegade’ by X Ambassador.s The MS Media Club will be working on a lip sync mash-up video to ‘Renegade’!
7/8 Band: The 7/8 Band & Chorus concert is Tuesday, 12/13 at 7pm in the HS Auditorium! Students who did not complete their assessment on ‘Dark Ride’ this week will need to be prepared to play it at their lesson the week we come back from Thanskgiving. Challenge: Play your concert music for at least 3 different people! Pets can count:) Recordings of all concert music are posted on Google Classroom- play along with the recording!
STEAM: This week we completed our engineering Windmill Challenge. We will begin our Agriculture unit and compete in the NYS Mac and Cheese Challenge after the Thanksgiving break.

ELA 8: Students continue their reading of Lois Lowry’s The Giver. This week, they are writing predictions using the CLEAR paragraph graphic organizer.
Social Studies: This past week we continued to look at the changes & impacts that westward expansion had in the late 1800s, with a focus on Native Americans. I will be sharing a few Nearpod presentations with students that have a variety of sources to analyze, video clips to watch, and 360° images to explore. We ended the week with a quiz.
Science 8: We have been studying the properties of gasses and the influence of energy on the motion of the particles in gasses. Students worked really well and cooperatively this week in our investigation of the heating and cooling of gasses. They even got some great pictures to add to their portfolios. It would be helpful if students had an ample supply of PENCILS for class.
Regents Earth Science: We have been studying weathering and erosion. Students have learned about the different kinds of weathering, the formation of soils, and the four main types of erosion. We will continue our studies of erosion and landscape development after the break.
